Looking Back: Reflecting on my Writing Journey
Throughout my writing journey in this course, I've learned a great deal about myself as a writer. One significant realization was the recognition of my flexibility and adaptability in the composing processes. I tended to approach writing in a linear fashion, but as I progressed, I embraced the non-linear nature of composing. I discovered that my writing process is deeply influenced by my individual needs, previous experiences and current circumstances. Understanding this has allowed me to be more forgiving of myself when my process doesn't have a predetermined path.
The most challenging aspect of the project was navigating through biases and assumptions, both my own and those of my potential audience. It required a heightened sense of self-awareness and critical thinking to ensure that my writing remained open to diverse perspectives and ideas. Incorporating visuals and technology into my compositions was a new territory for me. It was an uphill battle that provided an opportunity for creative expression and enhanced the overall impact of my work and gave me an extra element that was slowly being discovered.
As for new strategies and processes, I tried experimenting with blending variations in Englishes for specific audiences and purposes. Taking this risk allowed me to expand my linguistic repertoire and effectively communicate with diverse readers. I also embraced metacognitive strategies to evolve my composing practices. This habit of mind has given me more confidence to try and transfer my knowledge gained from my project to other writing situations and help with my continuous growth and improvement in the future.
Feedback from both my peers and teacher has played a major role in my revision process. While some critiques were expected, others offered fresh insights that challenged my perspective as a writer. Incorporating this feedback required humility and a willingness to revise with an open mind. All the feedback received helped with my perception of myself as a writer, reaffirming the areas where I excelled and highlighting areas for further development.
One aspect of my work that I'm particularly proud of is my ability to engage respectfully with diverse perspectives and groups. This helped enrich the depth of my writing but also increased a sense of inclusivity within the writing community. My vision of myself as a writer has evolved significantly since the beginning of the course. I now see myself as more adaptable, resilient and conscious of the impact of my writing on others. I believe that this class has moved me forward in the right direction on my writing journey.
Looking Forward: Embracing Growth and New Perspectives
As I move forward in my journey, I aim to adopt a more exploratory approach to writing, embracing experimentation and innovation. I intend to leverage the skills and habits practiced in this course to navigate future compositions with confidence and creativity. While proud of my growth, I recognize the need to continue refining my skills, particularly in areas such as rhetorical understanding and critical thinking.
The skills and habits I cultivated during this course are highly transferable and will undoubtedly serve me well in future writing endeavors. I aspire to practice a flexible approach, culturally relevant language and engage with diverse audiences across various genres and modalities. I would like to remain curious about the nuances of writing to fuel my ongoing learning journey of writing.
I envision myself as a little better writer going forward, I see myself committed to authenticity, empathy and lifelong learning. The journey must go on. This type of perspective will help shape my experiences, allowing me to navigate the academic, professional, social and civic realms of writing with purpose and integrity. My new goals as a writer will extend beyond this course, encompassing a dedication to continuous growth, meaningful engagement and positive impact through my writings. This course has allowed me to take a small step in the right direction and hopefully a giant leap in the near future on my journey to become a better writer.
