ENG 598 Environmental Humanities
Summary One of the assignments for this class was to produce a presentation about a short media text (eg., video clip, news article, podcast, tv episode, etc.) that represents an environmental issue or conflict. I selected the poem, "Rise: From One Island to Another," by Marshall Island environmental activist, Kathy Jetnil Kijiner. In this video, I discuss how this poem addresses the "blue humanities" (environmental issues related to water) and the impact of climate change on marginalized populations, in this case, residents of Pacific Island nations.
AAC&U "Educating for Democracy" Conference 2022
Summary I submitted a proposal to the 2022 American Association of Colleges & Universities annual conference, "Educating for Democracy," and was thrilled it was accepted for a 90-minute hands-on workshop. The content of my workshop was synthesized from the research I had conducted for ENG 501, ENG 552, and the Connecticut Writing Project, and experience incorporating counterstory essays into my first year English composition class. Participants learned how counterstorytelling can disrupt the canon while serving as a bridge to marginalized students, inspire students’ curiosity about themselves and others, empower students to investigate social structures that impact their lives, and challenge students to become active participants in a democratic society as civically engaged writers.
Teaching Philosophy and Vision
Summary I applied for an Instructor of Communication position in early 2022 and was thrilled to get called for an interview, and then a second, and then I was asked to present my teaching philosophy and vision to the college CEO and faculty members. This is the presentation I created to illustrate how I've synthesized my scholarly work in composition studies with my dedication to social justice issues relevant to my students. I support a deliberate anti-racist, multicultural, gender inclusive, and equitable approach to teaching, and I believe it is my role as an instructor to remove barriers to learning so that all students have the opportunity to succeed.
Center for Teaching Workshop
Summary I've attended numerous workshops offered by the Center for Teaching, a professional development program at my community college. Because I had discovered how to incorporate digital tools into the online classroom from my experience with the Connecticut Writing Project, I wanted to share what I learned with colleagues. I developed this quick hands-on introduction to Canva demonstrating how to create social media memes, slide shows, videos, and infographics for class activities. The feedback was so overwhelmingly positive that I was asked to do a second workshop on using Poll Everywhere to engage students.
