Founders Lab

-a Barrett Thesis Project-

The Concept

The Founders Lab is a 6-credit (WPC 492 & 493) opportunity for students to instigate their own entrepreneurial journey, and develop belief in their entrepreneurial skills, that challenges students to learn and apply entrepreneurial concepts through the development and deployment of [new] business. This experience also is approved as a Barrett Thesis Project Pathway, available to current Barrett Honors students in good standing.

Throughout this intensive program, students gain entrepreneurial confidence as they exercise their critical thinking, business writing, and communication skills through by hypothesizing, testing, and adapt a business plan - ultimately targeting traction through user acquisition and sales. This untraditional academic experience focuses on empowering students to engage with a specific opportunity, identify a distinct audience, and provide something of real value (that your target audience will exchange value to obtain).

As outlined above, this program is intense and it requires self-direction (as is entrepreneurial), determination and commitment. We ask that all students who aren't able or interested in this commitment think very seriously about the requirements of this program before committing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I work on my own idea?

A: Yes. While it is true that this thesis was originally designed for participants who are looking for an idea and a team; we've found that some students thrive in teams, while others thrive on their own.  We've had individual and team successes, and have since adapted this program for students to pursue their entrepreneurial journey in any manner they choose.

Q: Where do the 'validated ideas' come from?

A: These ideas come from a variety of locations. Generally created as generic concepts that students can enhance (i.e., Lemonade stand, Plastic Utilization, Cake in a Cup, etc.) we also have our ideas supplemented by other opportunities from our ASU partners like NASA, and Community Members, etc.

Q: Can I select my own team?

A: Not really. While you can choose to work individually or in a team - you can't necessarily select your team. For those who choose to work in a team, they will have the chance to network with other students and make recommendations. However, those recommendations aren't guaranteed (although most times students get at least one person they requested on their team (and teams are normally 3-5 participants).
