The Latino Undergraduate Research Collaborative (LURC ) is a component of LatLab providing opportunities for ASU undergraduate students to engage in applied research in the fields of community health and well being, urban policy and planning, and economic development as it pertains to Latino communities in Arizona. Students participating in the collaborative experience research as a professional field while working on their honors thesis, capstone projects, or independent studies. Students participation in LURC has been supported by the Wells Fargo Foundation, ASU-Mayo Obesity Solutions, CLAS Undergraduate Summer Enrichment Program, and Google.
This project examines how public parks are allocated among Latino and non-Latino neighborhoods in Greater Phoenix. Quantity and quality of neighborhood parks were evaluated using a combination of GIS and Google Earth imagery.
The purpose of this community assessment is to identify the most pressing needs of the Carl Hayden Neighborhood and use that as the basis for informed decisions about development priorities for this predominantly Latino neighborhood.
This project investigates spatial patterns of community resilience to extreme climate variations and their correlation with Latino places in Greater Phoenix. It also explores ways to transform barrios from vulnerable to resilient communities.
A project exploring the metamorphosis of Metro Phoenix into a Mexican metropolis. We study the formation of Mexican barrios and the material and social transformation of Metro Phoenix by old and new immigrants.
