Class overview
Welcome to ENG 102. This first-year composition course focuses on academic writing, developing effective writing processes, and supporting students’ development as critical readers, thinkers, and writers. It introduces students to inquiry-based research and writing, important competencies for success in both the university and public domains. Students will compose in a variety of genres and modalities and learn the significance of the rhetorical process, including invention, revision, and reflection. All work in the course assumes an interdisciplinary perspective and students will create projects resulting in approximately 5,000 words. The course concludes with students presenting a digital portfolio of their work.
Students in ENG 102 begin their inquiry based work by choosing a topic. With the topic in hand, they will develop a list of reasons for this topic’s importance and draft a research question. Next, students will conduct research, create an annotated bibliography, and compose a research-based argument in defense of their topic’s importance. This work will be followed by a multimodal assignment, and the course will conclude with a Digital Portfolio. Each major writing project will be supported by process work and include a reflection in which students will review their composing process in relation to the course goals.
