Our goal in Module 1.3 is to look at ways to enlist industry role models and partners who are potential employers of your students to communicate career opportunities that reflect their company’s and their personal commitments to diversity, equity and inclusion.
We are going to learn about a local utility company, Con Edison. We’ll look at its businesses, changing workforce, diversity equity and inclusion initiatives, and career opportunities for STEM students. We’ll also hear about role models who started out in entry-level positions at Con Edison and progressed to executive leadership roles.
We will engage in conversation, view a video, reflect on the company’s culture of change, and at the end, offer a set of industry-related activities to try with students in an upcoming course, or to make your students aware of. In completing module 1.3, we hope that you will come to understand 1) Con Edison’s business, 2) How Con Edison’s strategic initiatives and employee benefits can appeal to diverse students as they explore STEM career goals, 3) How Con Edison’s dedication to culture change connects diverse employees, fosters as sense of belonging and inclusion in the company, and builds bridges towards better understanding and fixing inequities, 4) How different entry level positions in STEM began a lifelong career path for current leaders who worked their way up in the company and now serve as industry role models to diverse students in STEM, and 5) Future partnerships to bring industry role models to your students or bring students to the company.
