Our goal in Module 1.1 is to transform perceptions and shift thinking from deficit to asset orientation.
We are going to learn about differences in faculty and student perspectives on education, asset vs. deficit thinking, cultural capital, and a few approaches for introducing culturally responsive pedagogy. We will engage in self-reflection, conversation, see a demonstration, and end with a “pledge” to try a culturally responsive exercise with students in an upcoming course. In completing module 1.1, we hope that you will come to realize that students of color bring a wide range of skills, knowledge and experiences to the classroom and it is our job to create an inclusive classroom environment in which they can see themselves and thrive.
