SHS 367: Language Science
In this course, we explore many aspects of language and communication, including linguistic principles, psychological processing, and social interactions. The diverse topics include basic linguistic principles (phonology, morphology, syntax), memory for language, the organization of internal knowledge, speech perception, reading, pragmatics, sentence and discourse processing, and neuro-linguistics. We discuss how language and the need to communicate can influence, and are influenced by, specific psychological, personal, societal, and cultural issues. This class meets the ASHA certification standards for human psychological and linguistic processes.
SHS 500: Research Methods in Communication Disorders
This course is a survey of basic statistics and research methods in areas related to communication disorders. The overall goal of this course is to provide students with a knowledge foundation in standardized testing, research design, basic statistics, research ethics, evidence-based practice, and critical thinking, which will allow them to understand and critically evaluate research articles. Through videos, readings, activities and presentations, students will learn how research is not only relevant, but integral, to successful clinical practices/treatments. This course partially fulfills ASHA Standards forthe Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology: Standard IV-F-The applicant must have demonstrated knowledge of processes used in research and of the integration of research principles into evidence-based clinical practice.
SHS 790: Effective Course Development, Teaching, and Mentoring
This seminar is part of a series of professional seminars designed to prepare Au.D. and Ph.D. students as well as Post-Doctoral Fellows for an academic research career. This seminar covers effective course development, teaching, and mentoring.
