K to 12 vs. MATATAG Curriculum
K to 12 vs. MATATAG Curriculum
The tasked was to compare the K–12 and MATATAG Curricula. In my table, I presented details highlighting their goals, scope, and key features, both similarities and differences. It was designed to deepen my understanding about educational systems currently implemented in the Philippines. As a product of a K-12 Curriculum it is not hard for me to distinguish it to Matatag Curriculum. As I’ve made my table, I appreciated how clearly the similarities and differences were laid out, especially in areas like implementation, goals, and teaching focus. However, I found it a bit challenging to distinguish both as they have their own characteristics, areas for improvement and strengths.
This activity helped me see the shift in the Philippine education system from a broad, extensive curriculum (K–12) to a more focused and competency-based approach (MATATAG). It reflects how educational priorities are changing to meet students' real-world needs more effectively. As an educator, it is a need for me to understand how the curriculum changes as time goes by.
Constructing the content of the matrix on the similarities and differences of the K-12 and Matatag curricula deepens my understanding of both curricula. As a learner who experienced the K-12 program, it is indeed true that I encountered overloaded subjects, which I realise now do not cater to the essential needs of students. As subjects were overloaded, teachers often struggled to manage the requirements that their students had to meet. At the same time, students were loaded with complying subjects, which most were just passing the requirements for but not learning. As a product of the K-12 program, I usually ask myself, "Grabe, nakaya ko baya maghapon na dakol subjects na kaipuhan ipasa/adalan." I am proud of it, but in a way of multitasking the different subjects, I am disappointed for not grasping the essential knowledge of each subject per lesson.
In contrast, the MATATAG Curriculum creates a link between knowledge and skill application, which is crucial in the twenty-first century. Although the K–12 curriculum also strives to produce 21st-century learners, the MATATAG Curriculum places more emphasis on the fundamental ideas of learning, including life skills. Matatag, as the name itself implies, encourages students to be resilient and strong while they are learning.
In doing my reflection about the transition from K12 and Matatag Curriculum. Matatag Curriculum is still being studied and evaluated many students and teachers affected by the new implemented curriculum some hindrances and problems was covered especially workloads of the teachers and also the subjects of the students they are trying to address the struggles of each of everyone but it is not easy because many adjustment that may happen. But as a future teacher I will agree about the newly implemented curriculum and it is a huge help to the teachers, learners and other stakeholders because in terms of learning they lessen the class hours in teaching and they focus on the subjects that are really needed and very essential.
K12 and Matatag Curriculum have distinct approaches to education. K12 Curriculum focuses on the foundation of knowledge and it provides broader subjects and provides students more time to develop skills and knowledge. The Matatag Curriculum emphasizes resilience and skills in the 21st century to prepare the students for a rapidly changing world and to be able to adapt practical skills.
The K-12 and Matatag Curriculum share a common vision for nurturing holistically developed Filipino youth equipped with 21st-century skills. Both of the curriculum prioritize student-centered learning, critical thinking, and problem-solving, which are essential for the development of the young learners. Through this task, I've identified their similarities and differences in their goals, scope, and other features of the curriculum. Even though there are big difference on both of the curriculums, it help the students to be ready in their future.Overall, both curriculums aim to produce learners who are ready for higher education and who will find joy in lifelong learning.
As someone who has observed and experienced the Philippine education system up close, the transition from the K to 12 curriculum to the newly launched MATATAG curriculum feels both hopeful and late. The K to 12 system was a major reform, it aimed to align our education with international standards and promised to better equip students for college, employment, or entrepreneurship. But along the way, it became clear that more years in school didn’t always mean better learning.
In reality, many students and teachers struggled. The curriculum was overloaded, trying to cover too much too fast. Teachers were burdened with requirements, students juggled a heavy academic load, and parents often felt lost in the complexity of the system. Yes, it had noble goals, but the system often felt more like a race than a journey of learning. While, on the other hand the MATATAG, its name, MATATAG, which means to "strong and stable," sums up its goals, it is fundamental learning-based, focused, and straightforward. It stresses the mastering of fundamental abilities in the early grades, such as reading, math, and morals, rather than pushing pupils through topics too quickly. It implies that we need deeper knowledge rather than additional subjects.
What I appreciate most about the MATATAG curriculum is that it listens. It listens to the calls of overworked teachers, to students overwhelmed with content, and to parents who want their children to actually learn, not just pass. It’s not perfect, and no curriculum ever is, but it’s a step in the right direction.
In the end, education is not just about diplomas or job-readiness. It’s about forming thinking, feeling, and responsible human beings. If MATATAG can hold on to that vision while adapting over time, then maybe, just maybe, we are finally building an education system that truly serves its people.
As I work on this activity, I realize that I need to read and carefully understand all about the K-12 and MATATAG curricula for me to fully understand their characteristics, as well as how the curricula work. I got a score of 25 out of 30. I think I got that score because I did not include the other features that may help me summarize the two curricula. In doing this activity, it makes it easy for me to understand these two curricula and the effectiveness and contribution of the curriculum that we are using now. Curriculum that can resolve, change, and practice to improve the teaching and learning process of education.
In making this task it helps me to understand the difference and similarities between kto12 and matatag curriculum. By reading and exploring the whole content of both curriculum there are lots of findings that showed the significance of both curriculum in our education. This task helps me to expand my knowledge and deepen my understanding on the concepts that might be utilized the learnings, reasources and other needs of learners to be able to cope on 21st century skills. It also reflects on how we are already utilized this both curriculum nowadays which they now taking a pilot testing on the effectivity of this curriculum. This task gave us more knowledge on the importance of this curriculum to help educators to make their teaching more effective. This also impact on how we view education by utilizing both curriculum.
While making this task, I got to know the differences of K12 and MATATAG. Way back, we also studied the K12 and MATATAG, I thought I know enough of it, but while exploring the two curriculum, I realize there's still some aspect or area that I need to understand. This task help me to expand my knowledge about the curriculum used in Department of Education. These curriculum can be utilized in constructing your content, resources and planning while integrating 21st century skills. Since your future students will be a 21st century learners, then we must aid them with 21st century skills that they need to develop holistically. Then, these current two curriculum will be your guide to achieve those. Learning the similarities and differences between the two, I got to recognize what I should develop in my future students.
