- Born 09/10/1919 in Fort de France (Martinique)

son of Mary, Joseph, John and Mary, Georgia MC HUGH.

- Volunteered for the Special Military School on October 1, 1938.

- Appointed second lieutenant on September 2, 1939.

- Assigned to Infantry Depot No. 111 on September 2, 1939.- Assigned to the 116th Infantry Regiment on January 3, 1940.

 

Killed at the enemy in the forest of Saint-Michel (Aisne)

"Heurlemont Jacques" on May 17, 1940.



- Body returned to the family and buried at Fort de France on May 16, 1950.

Citation to the Order of the Division - Order No. 1423/C of March 4, 1943:

"Young officer, full of going and cold-blooded. Was fatally injured on the night of 16-17 May 1940 during a reconnaissance in the forest of SAINT-MICHEL. "

By decree of 8 June 1944, issued on the proposal of the Army General, Secretary of State for Defence, having regard to the statement of the Council of the Order of the Legion of Honour that the proposals of this Decree are made in accordance with the laws and regulations in force, Knights of the Legion of Honour shall be appointed posthumously by the following members:

GALLET de SAINT - AURIN (Mary, Joseph, Robert)

Sub-lieutenant class 1939, number 1613, at the recruitment of FORT DE FRANCE (Antilles); young and brilliant officer very brave and full of going. Bravely acted at the head of his section in the fighting of GIVET, from 13 to 15 May 1940. Showed a lot of notch in the defense of the SAINT-MICHEL forest (Aisne), during which he found a glorious death on May 17, 1940, during a bold reconnaissance.
