Fuji-yoshida is a city spreading out at the foot of Mt. Fuji which is the highest mountain in Japan.
The city is known for a home to the Mt. Fuji 5th station which is a starting point for climbing the mountain. The official climbing season is only limited to summer, but the nature surrounding the mountain shows different faces throughout a year that charms all visitors in no matter what season they visit.

The first impression you would get when you arrive in this city is how big Mt. Fuji is. Yes, Fuji-yoshida is one of the cities which is located very close to the mountain. You can literally get a glimpse of the view of the mountain wherever you are.
The symbol of the city is Kana-dori gate which towers over the street. It is believed that you will be moved to a sanctuary from a secular world once you pass the gate. You can feel how Mt. Fuji has been beloved by people who worship the mountain. Now, it is one of the spots in the city where you can take an instagrammable picture.
On August 26th and 27th every year, the area gets livened up by Yoshida Fire Festival which is called one of Japan's 3 unique festivals. The festival is held to appreciate the mountain, and to pray for climbing the mountain in safety and a good luck for the year. On the first day of the festival, around 70 three-meter-high-torches will be burned and the whole city is lit up. The scene is magical.

With its magnificence and beauty, the Japanese oldest collection of poems called "Manyo-shu" and many tales such as "the tale of the Bumboo Cutter" described Mt. Fuji. Also, the mountain was depicted in many "Ukiyo-e" which influenced western artists including Van Gogh and Claude Monet.
As a result of giving great influences on culture and people's lives, it was registered as a world cultural heritage site in 2013 in stead of a natural heritage site.

Mt. Fuji is officially opened for climbers from the beginning of July to the beginning of September.
There are 4 routes to get to the summit. Among all, Yoshida route which starts from 2305m high is the most popular one as 60% of climbers use this route. The route is well maintained and you can get to the starting point by bus. It takes around 7 hours to the top but actually many climbers stay in a mountain hut overnight to see the sunrise from the summit which is one of the most beautiful views you can see in Japan.
Mt. Fuji is relatively easy to climb as paths are well maintained and there are some first-aid stations, however, please be aware of mountain sickness and prepare appropriate equipments and stamina!
Around Mt. Fuji, there are lakes called "Fuji Five Lakes" which are famous for its beautiful scenery. Especially, Lake Kawaguchi is the closest one from Fuji Yoshida and it has the highest number of visitors among the five.
The road circling the lake which has a full of modern cafes, restaurant and some museums, is popular for driving. Driving through the great nature while enjoying the scenery is refreshing and you can get away from the hustle and bustle of a city! There are also many shops renting a bike if you prefer cycling.
As Fuji-yoshida city is located in Yamanashi prefecture where has no access to the sea and mountain area where is not suitable for a rice farming, edible wild plants and wheat are widely used in their traditional dishes.

・Yoshida Udon
When you think about Japanese food, probably sushi and ramen will firstly come up to your mind. However, udon is also one of noodles which is beloved by Japanese people. The main characteristic of Yoshida Udon is its hardness. The more you chew, the more the flavor explodes in your mouth.
・Hoto
Hoto and Yoshida Udon actually look very similar. The main differences between the 2 are, salt is used for Yoshida Udon in a boiling process while it is not used for Hoto. The toppings for Yoshida Udon are relatively simple, but many vegetables are used for Hoto. Lastly, Hoto noodle is flatter and wider.
Hoto-fudo is a chain restaurant which you can find several places in this area. They serve Hoto with a big portion, and the taste is mouth watering!
