By the decision of the Council of the Faculty of Foreign Languages and upon the Faculty QA members' discussion, the BTBF Manual of Quality Teaching/Learning at the University level has been officially implemented as a comprehensive tool for in-chair (Chair of Romance and Germanic Languages and their teaching methodology, Chair of Teaching Foreign Languages for Specific Purposes, Chair of Russian and its Teaching Methodology, and Chair of Foreign Literature) quality professional (methodological) counselling and criteria measurement. The Chair members in charge of quality assurance agreed upon the Dean's scheme of implementing the respective materials of the manual mentioned above through the following stages: (a) in-chair discussion for highlighting the most important chapters (titles), (b) developing methodological recommendations on how to implement the ideas and priorities highlighted in the manual, and (c) lesson/session observations by the Heads of the Chair for making sure the conceptual premises and their methodological implementations have been appropriately secured.
BTBF - the first sessions on quality teaching/learning: school context
On November 11-12, as part of the BTBF (Better Teaching for Better Future) international project supported and coordinated by the Zurich University of Teacher Education (https://phzh.ch/en/), the Pedagogical University hosted a group of teachers to participate in the training on collaborative and project-based learning features. The choice of the topic was determined by the recent educational reforms, according to which project learning is defined as the principle of evaluating the student's learning results. Project-based learning, as a relatively new educational phenomenon/technique, raises several questions for teachers, and the Pedagogical University, committed to its mission of being next to the teacher, initiated this training to clarify as much as possible the questions that concern teachers, to guide them in the selection of topics and the implementation of the project.
After the two-day meetings, teachers, armed with new knowledge and skills, will enter the classroom to implement the project planned within the program's framework, the results of which will be summarized in December. The program is ongoing; the next training is scheduled for November 25-26.

Within the framework of the professional development courses between December 23 and December 25, 2023, Khachatur Abovian Armenian State Pedagogical University hosted a group of about 55 school headmasters from all over Armenia in order to discuss the main issues related to quality school management. The topics, methods, and all the major issues discussed were based on the principles introduced in the Quality School Management Manual, which was developed, adapted, and implemented in the Armenian educational realm within the framework of the international project Better Teaching for a Better Future. Together with the onsite sessions, the course participants had an opportunity to give their feedback and share their ideas online. The results of the feedback are currently being analysed in order to improve the course, come up with some research fields to be explored at the Pedagogical University as well as with some recommendations that might be handed over to the Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sports of the Republic of Armenia as for further school system reforms. The issues highlighted and the topics outlined by the Swiss Experts of BTBF – Zurich University of Teacher Education – focused mostly on the most disputable, subtle in the measurability domain of school as a democratic micro-society. Due to the principals' request, the Pedagogical University plans to offer at least one more session for the school headmasters in January/February 2024.
Preliminary Summary of BTBF Training Session Results
On January 16, upon the initiative of the Swiss Group of Experts, Corinna Borer, Wiltrud Weidinger, and Rolf Gollob, and within the framework of project accountability, an online session was held to discuss the end-of-the-year work-plan accomplishments, more specifically, the series of trainings organised by the Armenian Group of Experts – Marianna Harutyunyan, Kristina Tanajyan, Saten Sargsyan, and Tigran Mikayelyan – for school teaching staff and headmasters. The priorities reiterated and highlighted by the participants covered the domains of disseminating progressive methodology, raising awareness, and advanced management. Moreover, the online meeting participants reconfirmed the importance of such training sessions in not only continuing professional development and self-assessment but also in meeting community interests and needs, contributing to the formation of a democratic society and national policy-making processes. The preliminary overview of the feedback provided by the participants of training sessions inspires optimism in the potential positive impact of the principles stated and disseminated by the BTBF project, instruction materials (manuals), and the Group of Swiss Experts in the Armenian educational realm. The meeting participants agreed upon methodological and content-based summary submissions by the end of January and several technical issues related to the recognition of the results of the training sessions conducted.

Teachers receive certificates after completing training course
The teachers who underwent training through the “Better Teaching for a Better Future” (BTBF) international program received their certificates today.
The coordinator of the training organized through cooperation between the Armenian State Pedagogical University (ASPU) and the Zurich University of Teacher Education (PH Zurich) is ASPU Vice-Rector for HR Management and International Cooperation Marianna Harutyunyan, and the training lecturers are Dean of the Faculty of Foreign Languages Tigran Mikayelyan, Professor of the Chair of Romance-Germanic Languages and their Teaching Methods Satenik Sargsyan and Professor of the Chair of Sociology and Social Work Kristine Tanajyan.
The professional development course was devoted to the topic “Cooperative Training, Project-Based Training, Motivation” and consisted of 30 stages, each of which was held with the participation of more than 30 teachers, and 34 teachers completed the course. The teachers have, as an end-result, a project task or a lesson based on cooperative training which are posted on the Classroom platform and are available for everyone. The works will also be printed soon.
By the way, this is the first attempt at organizing a training course within the scope of the longstanding cooperation between the Armenian State Pedagogical University and the Zurich University of Teacher Education.
ASPU Vice-Rector Marianna Harutyunyan congratulated the teachers who completed the training course and voiced hope that the three-day training course had met their expectations.
“Large-scale reforms have been launched in the education system, and they need to start with you. You work with pupils every day, and every mistake or incomplete working day keeps you behind the process,” Vice-Rector Harutyunyan remarked and expressed gratitude for attaching importance to the training course, adding that this attests to the fact that pupils are in good hands.
Tigran Mikayelyan believes that the certificates are the result of the efforts of teachers and will be valuable in their work. Once again, he proudly mentioned that he was born to a family of teachers and has a very good picture of the daily lives of teachers and their families. “Besides the many wishes that I have for you, I also wish you a ‘keen eye’ to see the peculiarities, ideas and value system of the current generation. I fully hope that the toolkit that you obtained during the training course will be very helpful and effective,” he said.
Satenik Sargsyan assured that teachers lie at the core of any change and the success and effectiveness of changes are conditioned by them.
The training professor voiced hope that the product created as a result of the Program will be introduced in schools and that the cooperation and meetings with teachers will be ongoing.
