Class Norms

* Make smart, safe choices with your behavior. What if it were on the front page of tomorrow’s newspaper? Would you be proud?

* Arrive on time, and ready to learn. Try to learn something new everyday, and improve on what you already know. Get your best work finished the first time. Take time.

* Listen to the speaker, and follow their directions quickly.

* Have some fun, smile and laugh. Be proud of your effort and how much you are growing, each day.

Volunteer Opportunities

Math Centers: One parent volunteer for daily math centers. The responsibilities of this opportunity are to assist the students as they work on their center, while I am working with small groups, or individual students. This could be rotated with another parent volunteer, coming in a couple times each week, or even just once per week. (2017-2018 Filled)

Classroom Projects & Events: Are you able to help with classroom projects as they pop up? If so, please send me an email. Perhaps you love to create bulletin boards, or enjoy crafting or party planning. The students love having you in here, and so do I! These are fun memories to be made.

Fall Festival: Are you up for some FANTASTIC FALL FUN? Please consider signing up to help run our classroom booth at Fall Fest! We are creating an incredible fishing game. We will need some mighty fish behind that curtain to help these kiddos reel in quite the catch!

Scholastic Book Orders: NQNVH

I love sharing the Scholastic book order forms with you each month. I only accept orders online. If you have never ordered online before, please follow the following instructions when doing so.

  1. Go online to www.scholastic.com/bookclubs
  2. Click on the Parents GET STARTED tab to connect to my classroom using my classroom code: NQNVH
  3. Choose your books online and pay.

It’s that easy!! No need to email me, Scholastic does that for you. I will close out the order toward the end of the month. Please email me to let me know if the books are a surprise, otherwise I send them home with your child.

Homework and Due Dates

I do not assign Math, Science, or Social Studies homework. I expect for my students to be engaged and working hard throughout our class time here at school. If your child brings work home which needs to be completed, it is because they were not able to finish it within the class period given. I will always allow for class time to complete assignments.

Your child will receive Spelling words on Monday. They may study at home and have someone sign that they did so. They may hand it to me on Friday, before the spelling test for a 'bonus point'. This point will help them, should they miss one word. This practice/signature is not for a grade.

Please try to read a few times per week, totaling between 75 - 100 minutes per week. If you have a busy schedule on weeknights, your child may read for a longer period of time for fewer days. We want to encourage this reading, and keep it enjoyable to grow lifelong readers. Your child will complete one short book report at home, each trimester. The first one is due on October 23. The two additional reports will be due on February 5 & May 7. Looking for cool material to work on fluency at home? Please go to the Core Knowledge Foundation site & look at the 3rd grade fluency pack they have available. It includes readings (both short stories and poetry) recommended by the Core Knowledge Sequence for 3rd grade. I read these aloud to the students, so the fluency is a neat component to add at home.

Studying math facts at home is so helpful to your child. These facts can be talked about as you drive to practice, while waiting in line, or for a few minutes at home. As they achieve automaticity with their facts, it frees up their thinking for conceptual math as we work through the problems. If your child is not yet to multiplication, no worries. Let's master those addition & subtraction facts within the first trimester, so they are ready to rock with multiplication facts for the remainder of the year.

Recess

Busy minds and bodies need breaks! In addition to many active learning opportunities in our classroom, we will be participating in active brain breaks. We go outside for recess after lunch.

Please send your child with the appropriate outerwear. Did you know that if your child brings snow gear (pants, boots, gloves, etc.), they can play in the snow at recess?! So fun!!

Snacks

We will have a daily snack in the classroom. This is fairly short, taking place in between subjects. Please send a healthy snack (no nuts of any kind), each day. These kiddos work hard, and get pretty hungry.
