Elements of the EXED program are rich and diverse. These courses are designed to encourage students to grow physically, mentally, and soulfully. Risk, adventure, and challenges are the mechanisms through which this learning occurs. The EXED Leader helps create the sense of adventure while maintaining a safe and educational space for this to occur. All of this is done through effective and competent leadership from the course leaders.
Leadership can seem daunting for some. It helps to reflect on the fact that the leadership you employ in the classroom is the same leadership needed to run a successful EXED course. Your leadership style and process is unique to you and this individualized style creates the mood and flavor of your EXED course.
There is no best way to lead. As styles may differ there are universal themes that underlay effective leadership. The National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) has created a leadership activity where you can identify your leadership style using the following activity.
