We are delighted to give you a preview of the 2024 Aspen Institute Ascend Fellows. This information is confidential until the public announcement at 12:00 pm ET on September 4, 2024.
We welcome your support and that of your communications team in sharing the news when we launch.
As you know, the Ascend Fellowship invests in a diverse cadre of leaders, well-connected, well-prepared, and powerfully positioned to build the political will, change systems, and drive the policy agenda needed for the prosperity and well-being of all children and families. Together, they work across systems and sectors to do the following and more:
Ensure new parents, children, and their families have access to mental and behavioral health services,
Expand access to early care and education in rural and immigrant communities and invest in the early childhood workforce across the country,
Apply lessons from Indigenous communities to home visiting and well-being across the lifespan,
Build family stability to help keep families together and children out of child welfare systems, and
Expand guaranteed income and other sources of capital, so families can determine their own paths.
The 2024 cohort demonstrates a deeper investment in leaders in the South, including Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, and Texas. These leaders recognize the need to address systemic injustice and value a model of leadership that works alongside those most proximate to the problems they are trying to solve.
Over the course of 18 months, Fellows commit to participating in four Fellowship Forums, each with its own unique theme and focus:
Forum I: Leadership & Values
Forum II: Identity, Narrative, & Perspective
Forum III: Courage & Integrity
Forum IV: Purpose & Legacy
Fellows also commit to creating and carrying out an action plan that amplifies their vision to enable children and families to reach their full potential, and optimizing monthly individual or peer group check-in calls. In return, the Ascend Fellowship provides the space, inspiration, and support to develop something meaningful, leveraging the Aspen Institute’s influence and reach to amplify Fellows’ leadership and bold ideas.
The selection committee considered each nominee against the Fellowship criteria:
Have a bold idea that can “move the needle” on policies, systems, and practices centered on our youngest children and their families;
Be at an inflection point in their leadership, with a big idea and readiness for action;
Embody an entrepreneurial spirit and high-impact drive;
Embrace a commitment to justice, equity, and an inclusive mindset;
Value lifelong growth, diverse perspectives, lived experience, and innovation in service of children and families;
Ensure that families and their success are at the center of change;
Represent the talent, potential, and diversity of our country, including sector, geography, gender, ability, race and ethnicity.
While strong candidates represent a range of disciplines, we prioritized the following types of leaders, innovation, and impact:
Leaders in the public, private, and social sectors with breakthrough ideas to reduce infant and maternal mortality
Non-profit or business leaders with transformative ideas around early learning systems and the workforce
State or local leaders ready to redesign public systems to focus on the well-being of our youngest children and families
Journalists, academic, or cultural influencers breaking through the noise to open hearts and minds to children and their families’ dreams
The Ascend Fellowship selection process is highly curated and competitive. For the 2024 cohort, Ascend considered 220 nominations and invited a subset to apply. After reviewing applications, we made some tough decisions to identify 37 outstanding finalists to interview. We then selected a final cohort of 22 inspirational Fellows.
Each year, we invite Ascend Fellows to welcome the new cohort. Below are some sample messages that you can use to promote the announcement across your channels. These are just suggestions though; please feel free to promote in whatever way you think would connect to your audience! We would just ask that you consider linking to the announcement video in whatever message you share.
