PAINTING & DRAWING

FALL 2020 with Miriam and Alex

Self-portrayal is a contemplative act that has challenged artists for centuries. Self –portraits, especially by young artists as gifted as these, not only testify to their skill and creativity, but also reveal more about their subjects than merely their likeness. They speak to identity, culture and the inner life of the artist.

Teens opened up their “artist eyes” and took a walk in the beautiful autumn scenery to collect still life materials. They looked around at home with their “artist eyes” and composed still life set ups to paint and draw.

Teens depicted their favorite corner of their home. During the pandemic lockdown we are looking and thinking about home in new ways.

Teens created posters to help encourage voter participation. Although they are too young to vote, several teens volunteered at polling places on November 3rd . So many have fought and even died to ensure that we have this right.

Looking at artists like Modigliani, Charles White, and Kerry James Marshall, teens experimented with expressive ways of depicting their subject.

Betsy Ross designed our first flag to represent the thirteen original colonies uniting to form a new nation. Our teens reflected on a new flag that would represent their hopes and dreams for our country at a moment of national self-reflection and reckoning.

Every artist has a doodle that is as unique and distinctive as a signature. Making a doodle drawing is a way to meditate and unwind during a stressful time.

Teens drew in reverse – scratching away a black surface to reveal the white paper underneath. They experimented with ways of using intentional mark making to create value, pattern and texture.

Quick gesture drawings help an artist train their eye to capture what a figure is doing. Great artists like Leonardo, Michelangelo, and our teens make hundreds of gesture drawings so that their extended figure studies will be expressive, accurately rendered and full of life.
