What is the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme (DP)?

IB mission statement

The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment. These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.

IB Program at ASM

At the American School of Madrid, the International Baccalaureate program provides a curriculum framework whose purpose is to prepare students for life beyond secondary school, where students are given the opportunity to challenge themselves at the highest levels of academic rigor as well as learn critical 21st century skills. All students who take IB courses (Full DP or individual Diploma Courses) learn thinking, self-management, communication, social, and research skills. While we are dedicated to helping students choose their IB courses wisely, the school does not restrict any student from accessing the IB DP program. The Upper School has adopted the IB learner profile as its own student profile, and we believe in the values promoted by the IB, as well as in the added benefits of experiences gained through the CAS (Creativity, Activity and Service), Extended Essay, and Theory of Knowledge program.
