Potential Outcomes
This process is intended to be educational and non-punitive, with the goal of restoring
professional relationships. In broad strokes the possible actionable outcomes include, but are not
limited to:
● The parties agree that no follow-up is needed on the part of the interpreter, and the conversations that took place in the meeting(s) have satisfied all parties.
● A letter/video from the interpreter to the complainant acknowledging the harm done and how they will avoid repeating these behaviours in the future.
● A set period of time working with a mentor or under supervision (deaf or hearing or both), and an agreed process to report back to facilitators that the agreement has been completed.
● A set program of learning and professional development and an agreed process to report back to facilitators that the agreement has been completed.
● Recommendations for ASLIA to respond to topics arising from the complaint in the form of community education (e.g., workshops, articles, VLOGS).
● In extreme circumstances, ASLIA has the authority to suspend an interpreter’s membership.
● Other outcomes negotiated and agreed to by the parties.
All agreements reached will be put in writing and signed by the parties. ASLIA will retain a copy of the agreement.
