Type: video
In the past, our publication had covered this celebration as a written article, but I thought the busyness and excitement of the event would lend well to video form. From shot planning to editing, I focused on crafting a clear narrative and including visually engaging b-roll that aligned with what was being discussed by interviewees’ to enhance the viewer’s experience. For those unable to attend — the celebration took place late at night on a weekday — the video offered deeper insight than text alone would've and hopefully encouraged more people to attend next year. This video went on to win a Best of SNO.

Through the process of making this podcast (my first ever), I learned how to balance audio levels and craft a cohesive narrative around two interview subjects. I edited it together using GarageBand — learning how to use the platform correctly for the first time — and aimed to highlight the nuances of voting for the first time coupled with navigating the overseas voting process, which, as you'll find out from listening, is not an easy feat! This podcast won a Best of SNO and first place in Multimedia Feature Reporting by an Individual from Youth Journalism International.
Type: photo gallery
In this gallery, I captured 12 shots of my school’s boys varsity basketball team in action — from dribbling and dunking to shooting and spectators cheering. I paid close attention to composition, timing, and framing to encapsulate the game’s energy and emotion in each frame. For example, I aimed to apply the rule of thirds wherever possible. This photo gallery went on to win a Best of SNO.

World Languages and Cultures Teacher Tamara Smith spoke with such passion about the Olympics that I knew it would be a shame not to include her actual voice in the story. The way she spoke was electric, and I wanted readers to feel the same way I felt during the interview — goosebumps and all. So, I enhanced my writing by embedding audio clips from the interview that expand on information included in the article. I also included some additional pictures and embedded a YouTube video to provide readers with more context of what she was discussing (the Olympic Truce Mural). This story won a Best of SNO and earned second place in the Best of Show Feature Story category from the National Scholastic Press Association at the 2024 Fall National High School Journalism Convention.

Following the publication of an in-depth investigative feature story on sexism in my school community that I wrote last year, I began hearing that a group of boys had founded a space to combat those misogynistic tendencies. So, I undertook this story with my Deputy Editor-in-Chief: Online. We both wanted to include as many additional storytelling elements as possible to enhance the readers' experience. Each piece of multimedia features a credit in the corner where you can see which of us made it. However, we both brainstormed and solidified ideas for them together and edited each others' creations.
