Chromebook Purchase: More Information

You will have received a letter outlining the continued roll out of our Chromebook Scheme. In "normal" circumstances we would have ensured parents were given the opportunity to see the devices and ask questions. Instead, we have made two videos to try and help with some of the frequently asked questions from parents. Please see below for more information.

For parents/carers of children in Years 8, 9 or 10, the relevant sections here are the video by Mr Marks our network manager and the FAQs. The video on Teaching and Learning by Mrs Jones is for parents of our new Year 7.

Common Questions:

Q: Why purchase a device through your scheme?

A: We have selected two robust packages for students, which include: Chromebook, Licence, Carrying Case, Extended "swap out" Warranty and Insurance. These packages include everything that the student will require, with the added benefit of the warranty and insurance, particularly reassuring for parents, as some students may damage their device.

Q: I already have a Chromebook, can I use that?

A: Yes, any Chromebook can be used by students in school, it does not need to be one of the devices we have recommended. However, an additional enrolment licence will need to be purchased, via Wisepay, in order for our IT team to configure the Chromebook for school use. This licence allows us to manage the device in a number of ways, including managing installed software and keeping a log.

Q: So you control the Chromebook?

A: During school hours, the Ashlyns IT team manage the device on your behalf. This ensures that devices can only be used for learning and that all safeguarding steps are taken. Out of school hours, these restrictions are lifted and the device is open for personal use; this allows students to have a single device for both work and recreational purposes.

Q: When do I need to order?

A: The web store (located here) will close on 10th July. We will reopen the store later in the year for any additional orders, however the next date will be after the start of the new academic year.

Q: For my son or daughter joining Year 7 in September, do I need to buy a device ?

A: The Curriculum and lessons for Year 7 are planned to include the use of a Chromebook. If you do not wish to purchase a Chromebook, we do have a number of devices to loan on a daily basis and these will be available in school. School devices cannot be taken offsite and are only for use during the school day, not for home-learning or other activities.
