Welcome to Grade 6 Math!
Our math curriculum is based on the Big Ideas Math program, which aligns with the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks for Grade 6.
Math class will include:
Guided lessons with note-taking (notes will be posted to Google Classroom after class)
Individual, small group and whole group practice
Games, projects and hands-on activities
Remediation and enrichment
The topics we will cover include:
The Number System
Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and division to dividing fractions.
Compute fluently with multi-digit numbers and find common factors and multiples.
Apply and extend previous understandings of numbers to the system of rational numbers.
Ratios and Proportional Relationships
Understand ratio concepts and use ratio reasoning to solve problems.
Algebraic Expressions and Equations
Apply and extend previous understandings of arithmetic to algebraic expressions.
Reason about and solve one-variable equations and inequalities.
Represent and analyze quantitative relationships between dependent and independent variables.
Geometry
Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving area, surface area, and volume.
Statistics and Probability
Develop understanding of statistical variability.
Summarize and describe distributions.

Homework
Math homework will consist of review, preview and project work.
Assignments will vary in length and time allotted to complete.
Specific due dates will be given for every assignment and all students will be asked to use their agenda to keep track.
Project work will be broken down into attainable timelines with frequent check-ins.
All assignments will be posted on Google Classroom.
For excused absences, students will be given full credit for homework as long as they complete it by the date agreed upon by the student and teacher.
Late homework? Students should discuss it directly with Ms. Garretson.
Grading
We check for understanding through assignments (homework and projects), formal assessments (tests and quizzes), and student engagement (classwork and student participation).
A student’s term grade is based on an average of these items, with assessments representing 50%, homework representing 40%, and engagement representing 10% of the grade.
Any student who earns less than 80% on a test or quiz can “buy back” incorrect problems. To do this, students must attend a Buy Back session to review and re-attempt the incorrect problems with Ms. Garretson. Buy Back sessions will be during Discovery or after school, and the times will be communicated to all students at the time the quiz/test is returned. Students will be given half credit on any corrected problems for a maximum score of 80%.
Parents can keep track of student progress throughout the year by logging into IParent. IParent is a feature of the IPass Student Information System that provides parents access to schedules, grades, assignments and attendance records. For information about obtaining an IParent account, parents should read the attached document entitled "IPass FAQ".
