ASFG English Department Philosophy Statement

The study of literary texts - fiction, non-fiction, and poetry - encourages students to examine the human condition in all its aspects, and to effectively respond to the world around them in thoughtful and articulate ways. ASFG provides a high quality language arts education which emphasizes cultural literacy, human values, creativity, and critical thinking and which also empowers students as listeners, readers, writers, and speakers.

About Me

I teach largely in order to keep learning, from my students, from literature, my colleagues, my communities of learners. I have been teaching (mostly) High School English for 35 years, in Canada, Mexico (ASFG), Indonesia, Taiwan, and China. I believe that readers are the coolest people. I know the power words contain, and find delight in helping others unlock that power. I believe in love. I love baseball, jazz, intelligent lyrics, and the woman, amazingly, who has been by my side for the last 25 years and is by far the best of me. I ran MUN programs for more than 20 years, and taught IB Global Politics, so I care about what our world is becoming and failing to become. It will be my honor and delight to teach Honors Literary Magazine, College Preparatory Grade 12 English, and AP Literature and Composition .
