Mr. josh halpren

Social Studies

Hello!

My name is Mr. Halpren and I teach U.S. Civics and Model United Nations here at ASFG! This is my first year at ASFG but my 10th year teaching. I was born in Baltimore, Maryland and previously taught in Silver Spring, Maryland in the United States just outside of Washington, DC. I am proud of my home state so  come check out the giant Maryland flag in my classroom!

I love to cook and bake and explore new cities. I especially love to find cool new restaurants and am excited to explore all that Guadalajara has to offer. If you have any questions about our class or want to get in touch with me I am available by email at josh.halpren@asfg.edu.mx

Model United Nations

This course is designed to develop and maintain an appreciation for current events and issues on a global scale, as informed by a historical and institutional understanding of the United Nations. You will develop and improve research and writing skills necessary for the conduct of informed debates on questions before the United Nations’ role in the promotion of a global community.

We will get to participate in a few in-person MUN conferences this year including ISRMUN in Monterrey and GUAMUN here at ASFG. We will also travel to an MUN conference in either the United States or Canada later in the spring. (More details on that will come soon!) I'm looking forward to working with you to explore new ideas and think about how to create a better world.

U.S. Civics

In this course we will learn about the structure of the US government and the rights and duties its citizens and residents hold. Although this class focuses on the United States, we will spend time comparing the US with Mexico, and learn about the US role in the global community.

Civics is a wonderful course in which we get to see what we learn play out in real time. 2024 is an election year in the United States and this presents a great opportunity for us to see what we are learning about play out in real time!

Furthermore, our goal is to practice and further develop our ability to think critically, and present our ideas and arguments in both verbal and written format. We will do this through simulations, discussions and debates.
