Description: Get to know ASD! You'll learn about what school is like at ASD, and you'll get to know your fellow 6th graders. Mr. O'Connell will also review concepts key to your success this upcoming year! This class is a tremendous help for new students. It runs for two weeks, so when school starts in the fall, you'll hit the ground running with new friends! This class almost always fills up, and spots are first come first served. Description: In this course, students will be guided through lessons to create computer programs, develop problem-solving skills, and work through fun challenges! Students will make games and creative projects utilizing the code.org platform. Concepts covered in week 1 will include debugging skills, using loops and nested loops to create sequences and setting up conditionals in their code. Week 2 dives deeper into those skills, as well as incorporates the use of variables, sprites and user input to create interactive animations. This class almost always fills up, and spots are first come first served. We will open a new section if the waiting list grows.

Description: Students can learn how to best organize themselves in order to be successful! They will participate in organizational activities, and also learn some tips and tricks about staying organized. This will also give them a head start on knowing what materials are required for their classes next year. This class includes techniques for both physical organization and electronic organization, a key for success! This class almost always fills up, and spots are first come first served. We will open a new section if the waiting list grows.

Description: Let's get a jump start on middle school writing! Students will learn to write solid paragraphs while avoiding common grammar mistakes. Practice will also include plenty of opportunity for creative writing. Additionally, you'll get to know your new classmates as well as one of your 6th grade teachers!

Description: This course is intended for students who have not yet had Algebra I. Some Algebra I basics will be covered this week to prepare the students to begin Algebra I at ASD, and also some deeper Algebra concepts like factoring polynomials will be introduced to give students some advance practice. Although the course is intended for incoming students, previous students may also enjoy this camp for a review of Algebra I concepts, as they prepare to move on to their next math class. This course is also recommended for student who need to review competencies before advancing.

Description: This course is intended to provide structured resources for students looking for a little more structure on getting caught up on their math skills. Class time will be spent with a dedicated teacher available for instruction, organization help, and with resources to set students up for future success.

Description: This course is geared for students entering ASD at grade 8 or above or have missed important biology concepts needed for the science curriculum. Topics covered include the organization of life, cell structure, and the chemical basis for life. Students who feel they could use a "refresher", or reinforcement for competency should take this course. This course is strongly recommended for students new to ASD.

Introduction to Python

Description: Learn some of the basics of programming in Python. Python is an easy to learn programming language which is used by NASA’s JPL and other industry giants. In this course, participants will learn some of the basics of the Python syntax while coding fun projects. This is especially helpful for students who will be continuing their programming classes during the school year. Some coding experience like Scratch would be helpful, but not required.

Description: Have you ever wondered how they design apps for smartphones? Stop wondering and start creating YOUR very own app! In this two week introductory session, students will learn how to develop their very own smartphone apps using MIT’s App Inventor. Students will build their projects using an emulator on their computer. The emulator works just like an Android, but appears on the computer screen rather than a mobile device. Students will receive instructions on how to design a user interface, then coding its functionality. Some of the existing apps students will create in this session include a digital Magic 8-Ball, Ball Bounce, smartphone sketch pad, Whack-a-Mole, and mini-golf. Students are welcome to test on their current Android phone if they obtain one. If you’re new to coding, give it a try! Don’t just have fun this summer, learn to create apps that will amaze your friends! Description: This summer course will allow students to get their health graduation requirement completed in just 3 weeks as opposed to taking the semester long course during the school year. It is a great option for students expecting a full course load next year! This will be graded as a pass/fail course that will go on the student's transcripts. This course runs for three weeks. Rising seniors receive priority in this course.
