Welcome to 6th Grade at ASD and Getting Ready for ASD Math!

Grades: 6

When: July 5-8 AND 11-14 from 9:30-12 (Two week course)

Description: Get to know ASD! You'll learn about what school is like at ASD, and you'll get to know your fellow 6th graders. Mr. O'Connell will also review concepts key to your success this upcoming year! This class is a tremendous help for new students. It runs for two weeks, so when school starts in the fall, you'll hit the ground running with new friends! This class almost always fills up, and spots are first come first served. We will open a new section if the waiting list grows.

Organization and Time Management

Grades: 6-8

When: July 11-14 8:15-9:15

Description: Students can learn how to best organize themselves in order to be successful! They will participate in organizational activities, and also learn some tips and tricks about staying organized. This will also give them a head start on knowing what materials are required for their classes next year. This class includes techniques for both physical organization and electronic organization, a key for success! This class almost always fills up, and spots are first come first served. We will open a new section if the waiting list grows.

Introduction to the Engineering Design Process

Grades: 6

When: July 25-28 from 8:15-9:15

Description: Students will learn about and use the steps of the engineering design process to solve hands-on problems. They will try their hand at engineering by building paper towers, rubber-band powered cars and more! Students will design, build, and test their own solutions to fun engineering challenges.

Coding Animated Scenes

Grades: 6-7

When: July 18-21 from 9:15-12:00

Description: Students will begin with creating simple shapes and sprite objects, then use loops to create flipbook style animations. Next, they learn to use Booleans and conditionals to respond to user input.

Middle School Poetry and Writing

Grades: 6

When: July 25-28, from 9:30-12

Description: Let's get a jump start on middle school writing! This course will be about the wonders of poetry. We will write, read and immerse ourselves in poetry. Students will read poetry, write different types of poetry, and practice reading poetry aloud.

Middle School Grammar Review

Grades: 6

When: July 18-21, from 8:15-9:15

Description: Let's get a jump start on middle school writing! During this one hour class, we will review grammar rules that middle school students are expected to use in their writing. Punctuation, capitalization, usage, words often misspelled will be among the topics covered.

Math Competency Help

Grades: 7-12

When: July 11-14, from 8:15-9:15

Description: This course is intended to provide structured resources for returning ASD students looking for a little more structure on getting caught up on their math skills. Class time will be spent with a dedicated teacher available for instruction, organization help, and with resources to set students up for future success.

Cost: $80

Jump Start to Algebra

Grades: 7-9

When: July 11-14, from 9:30-12:00

Description: This course is intended for students who have not yet had Algebra I. Some Algebra I basics will be covered this week to prepare the students to begin Algebra I at ASD, and also some deeper Algebra concepts like factoring polynomials will be introduced to give students some advance practice. Although the course is intended for incoming students, previous students may also enjoy this camp for a review of Algebra I concepts, as they prepare to move on to their next math class. This course is also recommended for student who need to review competencies before advancing.

Introduction to Biological Principles

Grades: 8-12

When: July 25-28, from 9:30-12:00

Description: This course is geared for students entering ASD at grade 8 or above or have missed important biology concepts needed for the science curriculum. Topics covered include the organization of life, cell structure, and the chemical basis for life. Students who feel they could use a "refresher", or reinforcement for competency should take this course. This course is strongly recommended for students new to ASD.

Introduction to Python

Grades: 7-12

When: This 1 week course runs each week (July 5-8, July 11-14, July 18-21, and July 25-28) due to demand

Description: Learn some of the basics of programming in Python. Python is an easy to learn programming language which is used by NASA’s JPL and other industry giants. In this course, participants will learn some of the basics of the Python syntax while coding fun projects. This is especially helpful for students who will be continuing their programming classes during the school year. Some coding experience like Scratch would be helpful, but not required.

Geography Blitz

Grades: 7-12

When: July 18-21 or July 25-28, 8:15-9:15

Description: Many courses at ASD references geographical themes and knowledge. If you've ever seen on-the-street interviews of people who are unable to point out well-known countries on a map, you'll know that geography knowledge can be lacking for many people. This course will solve that problem for students by granting them a better understanding of the places in world around them. By the end of this FUN and fast-paced course, students will be able to better navigate the world and enjoy an improved capacity to understand current events for the rest of their lives.

Saving! Personal Finance for Students

Grades: 7-12

When: July 18-21 or July 25-28 (9:30-12:00)

Description: Would you like to save up for something big, like a car before you graduate? This course seeks to address the oft-lamented lack of financial education offered to students by providing an overview of personal finance topics to prepare them for adulthood. Topics discussed include spending and saving, college and debt, careers and retirement, and more. By the end of this course students will feel far more comfortable taking on the financial responsibilities that lie ahead for them.

Sewing Together

Grades: 8-12

When: Taken as 1 week (July 5-8, 8:15-12:00) or TWO Weeks for 1/2 an Art Credit towards graduation requirements (July 5-8 and 11-14, 9:30-12:00)

Description: We will learn to use the machines, read patterns and have at least one completed project at the end of each week. Open for all levels of sewing knowledge! Learning this life skill is SO useful and I think we will have a lot of fun while doing it!

Cost: 1 Week Option $240, 2 Week Option $500

Special: Materials are provided, but you'll need to bring a sewing machine which can be kept securely here during the course.

First Aid and CPR

Grades: 9-12

When: July 11-14, 8:15-9:15

Description: This course will go over the basics of first aid; proper bandaging, splinting, and how to handle an emergency situation. It will also cover preventative health measures to improve the lifestyles of the students attending. The goal of this course is to educate the students on how to properly handle situations so that the best outcomes are possible during an Emergency. This course is taught by a licensed Advanced EMT with over 3000 patient care hours.

Special: This Course grants certification in CPR from the Red Cross, good for two years

Nuclear Fusion - How It Works and Why It Will Change the World

Grades: 9-12

When: July 11-14, 9:30-12:00

Description: It's been in the news a lot lately, and it's captured the imaginations of physicists, science fiction authors, and environmentalists since your grandparents were infants, but it's confusing. Infinite clean energy sounds impossible, how do we contain 100+ million degrees safely, and why don't we have it yet? A fusion PhD candidate and ASD '18 will help you develop a thorough understanding of the How (little physics, first principles) the Why (to develop a clean, infinite source of dense power) and the What If (what can we do with it?) of this field. Along the way you'll learn the basics of nuclear physics, power generation, energy policy and spacecraft propulsion + laser beams. This course is taught by a PhD candidate at MIT and ASD alumna!

Birds Aren't Real And Other Outlandish Theories

Grades: 7-12

When: July 5-8, 8:15-9:15

Description: Who actually killed JFK? Did America really go to the moon? What about the ancient aliens? Together we will dive into the world's craziest conspiracies, discuss why they've spread, and maybe just so happen to stumble onto the truth behind these wild accusations. Join us for a week that combines history, pop culture and sociology (tinfoil hats not included).

History According to Marvel

Grades: 7-12

When: July 5-8, 9:30-12:00

Description: From the very first time that Captain America punched Hitler, to a bullet proof Luke Cage in an era of police brutality, and even the modern day parallels of the Patriot Act and Project Insight - Marvel comics has long drawn up real world events to shape it's characters, stories, and message. During this week long course, students will learn about some of history's most engaging events through the dynamic lens of Marvel comics. Students will gain insight into history through an often overlooked or maligned media, and discover a version of history that is far more marvel-ous than they previously knew.

Health

Grades: 9-12

When: July 5-8, 8:15-12:00 AND July 11-14 8:15-12:00

Description: This summer course will allow students to get their health graduation requirement completed in just 3 weeks as opposed to taking the semester long course during the school year. It is a great option for students expecting a full course load next year! This will be graded as a pass/fail course that will go on the student's transcripts. This course runs for three weeks. Rising seniors receive priority in this course.
