These classes are specifically geared towards incoming 5th graders. Note that 5th graders are welcome in the FLL camp, which is in the "Middle School" section below.

Description: Ease in to 5th Grade at ASD. This course will help prepare students for the 5th grade math program at ASD. Content directly leads into the school year curriculum. This course is ideal for both students looking for a challenge and students who are nervous about what to expect. On the last day of the workshop, a mini-project will be completed based on the topics covered during the workshop. The goal of this program is to make learning interesting through real life example based knowledge acquisition and creating a safe and inclusive learning environment.

Description: Students can learn how to best organize themselves in order to be successful! They will participate in organizational activities, and also learn some tips and tricks about staying organized. This will also give them a head start on knowing what materials are required for their classes next year. This class includes techniques for both physical organization and electronic organization, a key for success! This class almost always fills up, and spots are first come first served. We will open a new section if the waiting list grows.

Description: Get to know ASD! You'll learn about what school is like at ASD, and you'll get to know your fellow 6th graders. Description: Students will learn the fundamentals of 3D modeling software using Tinkercad, and use it to design different projects, such as a keychain, an avatar, spinning tops and more! Students will choose one project to print out and keep. Students will need to bring a device from home.

Description: This course is geared for students entering ASD at grade 8 or above or have missed important biology concepts needed for the science curriculum. Topics covered include the organization of life, cell structure, and the chemical basis for life. Students who feel they could use a "refresher", or reinforcement for competency should take this course. This course is strongly recommended for students new to ASD coming in after grade 7.

Description: This course is intended for students who have not yet had Algebra I. Some Algebra I basics will be covered this week to prepare the students to begin Algebra I at ASD, and also some deeper Algebra concepts like factoring polynomials will be introduced to give students some advance practice. Although the course is intended for incoming students, previous students may also enjoy this camp for a review of Algebra I concepts, as they prepare to move on to their next math class. This course is also recommended for student who need to review competencies before advancing.

Description: Do you want to learn how to keep systems and data safe from scammers and hackers? This is the class for you! Working in virtual environments, you will learn how to protect systems against outsider threats. We will cover how to set up a system so only authorized users can access it - closing ports, creating strong password requirements, and setting user privileges. We will also go over the important routine actions everyone should be taking to ensure their systems are safe. Additionally, you will learn how to keep your online data safe.

Description: An exploration of digital photography. Students will learn the functions of digital cameras, including the use of basic exposure settings - aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. Students will focus on basic photography techniques and guidelines for composing compelling photographs, and the majority of time in this class will be spent in hands-on practice sessions. This course will equip students with the techniques and principles to capture stunning images. This course requires students to bring a device capable of taking photos, such as a digital camera or a smartphone/tablet with a built-in camera.

Description: There are some topics that are essential to understand to make the process of learning Calculus about Calculus and not about past concepts. This class will help you review some of those concepts. Topics include Properties of the Toolkit Functions, Exponential, Logarithmic, and Logistic Functions, Trigonometry, and Polar Functions.
Students should bring a pencil, eraser, and their calculator.

Description: This course is for students moving from Accelerated Math 3 to Advanced Calculus. Over the four days, we will review the major topics from Calculus that you learned at the end of AM 3. Each day will focus on a couple of specific topics. Classes will include some presentation, but most class time will be spent with students working on problems individually and in small groups. Students are encouraged to bring questions they have from AM 3.
Students should bring their Calculus notes from AM 3, graph paper, pencils, erasers, and calculators

Description: This course will cover the basics of plant anatomy, important terminology, plant identification, and plant pressing. Interested in learning more about the flora that you see every day and learn how to identify and press plants on their own? The class is a mixture of science (learning about botany) and art (pressing plants to have your own collection).

Description: Are you interested in nature? Like to go outdoors? Interested in pursuing environmental sciences, wildlife biology, or ecology? Then this class might be a great experience for you! We will get a chance to learn about different data-collection techniques in the field as well as learn about some freshwater organisms. We will bring samples back to the lab which we will then explore to see if we can find some biodiversity differences between different freshwater sources. Field work will be rain or shine for the first two days followed by lab work for the last two days.

Description: An exploration of the American political system with a heavy focus on the 2024 presidential election. Topics of focus include the candidates, their rhetoric, their campaign strategies, and the broader circumstances of this unique election. With the upcoming election set to be a rematch between former president Donald Trump and current president Joe Biden, we will also analyze their previous paths to the presidency, exploring party primaries and the circumstances that allowed each of them to gain their party nominations. This course will give students the skills to critically analyze future elections at the local, state, and national levels.

Description: The course will introduce students to organic chemistry covering introduction to hydrocarbons and functional groups, nomenclature, isomers, reactions in organic chemistry including polymerization. Knowledge of organic chemistry is imperative for understanding vital life processes making it an indispensable part of biological and pharmaceutical sciences.

Description: This summer course will allow students to get their health graduation requirement completed in just 3 weeks as opposed to taking the semester long course during the school year. It is a great option for students expecting a full course load next year! This will be graded as a pass/fail course that will go on the student's transcripts. This course runs for three weeks. Rising seniors receive priority in this course.
