Reading Fluency Resources

Reading fluency is reading accurately, at an appropriate rate, and with expression. When children are able to read fluently, they can focus their energies on understanding what they are reading.

Strategies for improving reading fluency:

• Repeated Reading: Give your child the opportunity to read and re-read the same text silently and aloud. Provide feedback on their accuracy, rate and expression.

• Reading Jokes: Have your child find some jokes to read, practice telling the punchline, and perform for an audience.

• Read Together: Read along with your child to set the rate and encourage reading with expression. You can also read aloud first, then have your child read the same p iece right after you.
