Message from your Principal:
Dear Hanshew Families,
We are already 3 weeks into the 2nd quarter and we have had our first snow fall. Please remind your student to dress appropriately for the weather, including their shoes.
Thank you for attending our parent teacher conferences. If you did not get a chance to talk to your student's teachers, please call or email to set up a team meeting. Please encourage your student to start tracking their assignments and grades in canvas and Q. If they need support, afterschool tutoring is on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the library from 4:15-5:15pm and the writing lab is open on Wednesdays and Fridays in the library from 4:15-5:15pm.
November is Alaska Native/Native American Heritage Month. We will be celebrating the many accomplishments and contributions of the Indigenous People here at Hanshew. If you would like to volunteer or share your Indigenous culture with our students, please let me know. November 11th is Veterans Day- Thank you to all of our Veterans who sacrifice for our freedoms every day! There will be no school for students on November 11th, staff will have an in-service day. November 27-28 is the Thanksgiving Holiday and there is no school.
There are several upcoming sports, activities, and reminders, so please check the Hanshew website calendar to keep abreast of upcoming events! Wrestling, Cross Country Skiing, and Girls Basketball starts the first week of January 2026. Please turn in all paperwork to office 5 to be eligible by the first day of practice.
A special shout out to Ms. Labadan, Ms. Dolle, and Ms. Fee's advisory classes for winning the bullying prevention month door decorating contest! As a reminder, please encourage your student to be positive and treat others with respect. At Hanshew we are dedicated to providing a safe learning environment for all students. If your student is experiencing harassment, intimidation, or bullying of any form, please ask them to alert a trusted adult and/or submit an anonymous Stopit alert.
As always, thank you for your support, patience, and understanding this school year! Thank you for also entrusting us with the education and care of your students, we appreciate you!
Sincerely,
Dr. Lakhita Hodge

AP UPDATES-
November Highlights! A few reminders:
Winter is here. Hanshew strongly recommends that students not wear Crocs, open toed shoes or slippers during the winter months. It is a reqirement that we conduct evacuation drills every month, this means students standing outside in the snow for up to 10 minutes. In a real emergency students may need to be outside for a longer time, it is safer for students to wear appropriate shoes.
If students would like to attend a sporting event or activity after school hours they must leave school property by 4:15, they cannot stay at school until the event. When they return they MUST be accompanied by an adult, this is an ASD policy. Students without an adult will be sent home.
As temperatures drop students are wearing heavier coats, these must be put in the students locker before school. Light jackets, hoodies and sweatshirts are permitted but heavier coats are a safety concern.
