We believe in a balanced approach to literacy. Our multi-age room allows us to meet each child where they are developmentally and deliver instruction based up their needs. Content areas such as science and social studies are incorporated into our literacy block. We use Fundations and Wit and Wisdom as our main literacy curriculum. This is a comprehensive program that includes phonics, phonemic awareness, comprehension, vocabulary, spelling, and handwriting.
Children will engage in inquiry based, hands on science and social studies lessons. To ensure our students don't repeat content, our focus changes yearly from kindergarten content (basic physics i.e.push/pull forces, friction, gravity, seasons, weather, life cycles, self awareness, community resources, family) to 1st Grade content (AK animals, sound, light, coding, neighborhood, family cultures, mapping). For the 2023/2024 school year, we will be in a Kindergarten science and social studies rotation.
In addition to direct lessons that address social skills (conflict resolution, listening, empathy, responsibility), Social Emotional Learning is interwoven into every aspect of our class. Our goal is to not only develop strong and independent learners, but also good citizens.
Aquarian Charter School is piloting a new math curriculum this year, Illustrative Math. Children are leveled based on ability and receive instruction at their developmental level. Depending on where your child is placed, they will either stay with me for Kindergarten Math, or go to another room for Math 1 or Math 2. Incoming kindergarten students will take a placement exam with me during our informational meeting to see which class best fits their academic needs.
