Math (King):
It is hard to believe that the 2022-2023 school year is coming to an end. I have truly enjoyed each and every one of my students. The students have enjoyed working on interest, discounts and learning about how percentages work in everyday life. Next, students will complete the year by completing the i-Ready Diagnostic Assessment for math to show how much growth and understanding they have obtained. I know that students can continue to work hard through the last weeks of school!
Science (Magnuson):
The students have been studying waves and sound. We have had some fun labs with these and are now moving on to the electromagnetic spectrum and light. We will end the year studying electricity and magnetism, these always include some fun labs and activities. Thanks for sharing your students with me, I have truly enjoyed them this year!
Social Studies (Stewart):
It is hard to believe that the school year is almost over. This quarter has flown by! I have enjoyed our class discussions and getting to know each and every student! Pre-Algebra will then review the material from the year the final two weeks of school. Math 7 is wrapping up probabilities and will begin reviewing the year the at the start of May! Have a great summer! Cody Priest - Math 7 & Pre-Algebra
LANGUAGE ARTS Hello! We are rounding out the year with our class-chosen novels. The 8th Grade celebration will be happening on May 22nd. We have planned to do a picnic/field day for our 8th graders! If you can bring a dessert to share that would be appreciated. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Mr. Gumlickpuk at email: gumlickpuk_joshua@asdk12.org.
In Mrs. Whitesell’s Social Studies class, we are learning about the Age of Jackson and his many feuds. We will be discussing Manifest Destiny, Sectionalism, and onto the Civil War to end our 8th grade year.
In Mr. Gumlickpuk’s Math 8 class, students just started Volume 2 of our iReady workbooks. We will try to cover the majority of the book. In Volume 2 we will work with properties of exponents, scientific notations, rational and irrational numbers, the Pythagorean Theorem, and introduction to Statistics.
In Algebra, students have been working with polynomial functions and learning how to multiply, add/subtract, and factor a polynomial completely. Afterwards we will work on graphing quadratic functions and solving quadratic equations. Our last unit will cover radicals and solving rational expressions.
In School Business Partnership, students will learn more about our school business partners within the Hanshew community. In addition, they will learn more about careers and post secondary education and trade school.
Mrs. Giraldo’s ELA classes are ending the year with a bit of humor in “The Challenge of Comedy.” We’ve learned about slapstick humor, puns, and satire, and have read an excerpt from Mark Twain’s Tom Sawyer. Before the end of the year we’ll meet Shakespeare in A Midsummer's Night Dream. One of the most useful topics students will study and apply is how to overcome stage fright and address an audience.
Mr. Mittelstadt’s Science - By May 1st, we will be diving into Life Science with our exploration of Genetics. What makes you you? Why do you act like and look like your birth mom and dad? It's a great unit to end the year on due to the increased daylight and spring growth going on right outside our classroom.
In Mr. Oliver’s Science 8 and Advanced Science 8 classes, we are beginning our studies of biology by learning about the genetic code and DNA. Recently, we made DNA models out of food; soon, we will extract real-life DNA out of strawberries. In Animals of the World, we are learning about marine biology and the plethora of life beneath the waves - right now, we are in the midst of our first annual class Shark Week!
Ms. Lovelace’s Science 8- We are starting on Natural Selection and Evolution in Science 8. We are learning about the fossil record, adaptations, and variations. In Animals of the World, we are talking about animals in Europe and will be completing a biome project. In Strategies of Success, we are talking about summarizing, finances, and goals. In 7th period ELL Strategies of Success, we are in SEL units, Who Am I module. Daily work and participation log is due every Friday.
In Ms. Lowery’s Life Skills has been working on Motion and building a roller coaster for a marble to go down. They worked n their roller casters for three weeks. Each week we would do a test run and decide what needed to be done to make it work correctly. I am so proud of each student. They worked so hard paired with another student. This was an exercise using all the domains: Science, Social Skills, Life Skills, Math, and Language.
We are starting fractions and looking at how fractions divide items and how we can use them in everyday life. In Language, we are working on punctuation and capitalization.
We will be wrapping up the year by doing a cooking project using our airfryer.
In PE, we’ve been keeping active and having fun, despite the snow keeping us stuck inside later than we’d like. Recently we've been having some really competitive kickball games that have been a blast to watch. It's been great to see students getting involved and showing off their athletic abilities. Additionally, we've been playing lots of basketball and volleyball while we wait for the snow to melt and for the weather to warm up. We're all very excited to finally get outside and enjoy some fresh air but everyone is doing their best to keep things interesting while we wait.
In Health class, we've been working on some really interesting projects. Specifically, we've had some fantastic artist submissions for our anti-tobacco advertising posters. It's been impressive to see the creativity and thoughtfulness that our students have put into these posters. It's important to educate ourselves about the dangers of tobacco, and I'm thrilled that our students are taking this message seriously.
Overall, it's been a busy and exciting time in the health and PE departments at Hanshew and we can't wait to see what else we accomplish together over the final month of the school year!

Celebrations in May:
Cinco de Mayo (México). Commemorates de victory of Mexican forces over the French army at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. It is primarily a regional holiday celebrated in the Mexican state capital city of Puebla, and in other parts of Mexico. It is also celebrated in U.S. cities with a significant Mexican population. In Mexico, the majority of the Cinco de Mayo celebrations occur in Puebla, where the battle had taken place. People dress up either as French and Mexican soldiers or in colorful outfits to participate in large parades. Patriotic clothing is sold by vendors for people to wear and stalls selling Mexican food are also found everywhere. Although tacos are consumed the most on this holiday, as well as mole poblano, which is the official dish of Cinco de Mayo

Careers students are on the 2nd of 4 units in this Careers elective course. They have completed Unit 1 Exploring Careers and working on Unit 2 Developing Career Skills. Students have the opportunity this year to combine hands on activities with traditional Chapter Studies while in Mr.Korniczky's Technology Lab. An example was assembling rubber band/ propeller airplanes and also studying the airline industry.
Applied Technology students are presently working on Technical Drawing unit learning how to create oblique and isometric 3D drawings, multi-view drawings and when completed will move on to a manufacturing project utilizing the classroom machines.
