Message from your Principal:
Dear Hanshew Families,
Can you believe we are on the final stretch of the school year? Though we only have 2 weeks left of school, we want our students to finish strong. Please also remind students to bring their chromebooks and charging cords, and arrive to school wearing a mask everyday. Please encourage them to continue to attend class every day and be present for good teaching and learning.
If you are planning to go on vacation before the school year ends on May 20th, please contact the front office or registrar Jennifer Huff at 742-9930 or 742-9251 to excuse their prearranged absence.
The last week of school, May 17-20, is student appreciation week. Teams are planning to host the end of the year celebrations for students. In addition, our counselors are enrolling students for summer school. Please remember that students have an opportunity to attend summer school here at Hanshew during session 1: June 2-30th or session 2: July 12-August 6th!
As always, thank you for your support, patience, and understanding as we navigate the COVID-19 pandemic!
Sincerely,
Dr. Lakhita Hodge
Hanshew Middle School Principal
May Days
It’s hard to believe that it’s already May and the end of school is upon us. Many of us are looking ahead to summer break and a much-needed vacation/staycation. As the year comes to an end so to do our sports and activities which both end on May 14th. Thank you to all who participated. It was a delight to see students playing volleyball, getting fit in weight-training, flexing their creativity in ceramics, and cooking like master chefs! We look forward to next year when even more sports and activities can be offered at Hanshew.
Leave the Packs Behind!
A few end-of-year reminders; May 14th will be the last day for students to bring backpacks with them to school. Beginning on May 17th, students will need to hand-carry any necessary items. All items brought to school will be checked by security and staff. Non-essential items will be stored in a common location for the duration of the school day. Please encourage your student to leave all non-essential items at home.
Dress Code Reminder
Dress code is another area of focus as we round out the year. Although the weather is warmer, students are still expected to adhere to dress code standards. This means no crocs, flip-flops, sandals, and other open shoes, no jeans with rips above the knee, no head gear (to include bandanas), and no hoodies/shirts with reference to alcohol, tobacco and so forth. Please see the Hanshew Student Handbook for more details.
Student Drop-off/Pick-up
Please remember when dropping off and picking up your student from Hanshew to abide by the posted speed limit. We have had reports of vehicles speeding in and out of the pickup and drop off area as well as students walking in front of busses as they enter and exit the building. Please remind your student to be cautious and keep their eyes alert as they navigate traffic areas.
Fall Sports
As we look ahead to the 2020-21 school year, this is a great time to pre-register your returning Hanshew student. This can be done in the family section of Q. It’s also a good idea to get those sports physicals scheduled now so your student athlete will be set for the Fall sports season.
Have a wonderful May and fantastic summer!
Sincerely,
Valerie Baalerud
Assistant Principal HMS

All library books are due back by May 7th.
PLEASE return any books you may still have from the 2019-20 school year or from this year. Books from other schools can be returned to Hanshew, and Mrs. Berg will get them back to their home school. Textbooks should also be returned ASAP.
If your student has lost or damaged a book, the best option is to replace the book with a new or gently used copy of it (Title Wave is a great place to check). You can also pay for the replacement cost. Fine slips will be going out the last two weeks of school for long-lost items.

Congratulations to the 7th graders who have been accepted into NJHS for their 8th grade year! By earning at least a 3.5 GPA and sending in their applications, these students have earned their way into this great organization. There will be an induction ceremony for those students and their families on May 6th at 6pm on Zoom. The link has been sent to students via Canvas and to parents via email.
Thank you to all of our current 8th grade members for being a part of NJHS this year despite the challenges we faced!
