Paddling in awe.

Alaska, you Queen.

Wonder is not mine alone.
Fleeting moments gone.
We paddled through a bit of ice and out onto a beach for a short snack and rest as Julia, Allie, and I evaluated the path forward. From the water level, the inlet seemed full of ice, but raise the viewing angle a bit and you could see paths through even the thickest clumps of floating brash.

Will these horses drink?
Four thousand wings of scoters patter on the water.
Alpenglow on mountain peaks, rising from the ocean.
Avalanches roar from clouds above, like thunder.
Breath of mammals from the deep: a pelagic evocation.
I saw reflections of the mountains in the murky green water, their distant peaks shining from the small bit of sun we had been so hopeful for. Looking out and seeing the beauty of Glacier Bay, I felt like I could kayak for days off of that sight.

I got out of the boat, unloaded my things, and collapsed into my tent, never to think that “this would be an easy trip”.
If the nature in Glacier Bay could talk then I think it would tell us many things. The nature right at the mouth of the bay would likely tell us more about before the glacier and maybe of the Tlingit retreating from the glacier.

When we were at the base of the glacier we were silent; only the distant squawk of the gulls, flowing waterfalls, and the occasional splash of an otter or seal could be heard. We were staring over at a massive wall of shimmering white and blue ice and the black rocky divide in the middle. It was breathtaking.
I found that instead of knowledge and expertise, the intensive offered a place for personal growth.
Instead of focusing on an individual person's abilities, the intensive prioritized teamwork and co-operation.
This intensive is a place for personal improvement and life changing events.

I saw a frozen bay, which could melt and take us out at any minute. Except I wasn’t frightened, I was amazed. I also imagined what it used to look like before it melted away; it was pretty cool.

As we sang our songs
On our way to the glacier
The sea otters looked
With curiosity. Man,
I wish I had a Poptart.

The beach rocks make me wobble
Walking on rocks hurts
A maze of huge ice chunks floats atop the blue body of water, crisp air overshadowed by the cold that covers the bay.
I remember when the whale was surfacing. I remember hearing it blow while I was inside my tent. I remember the ground was cold on my bare feet but it didn’t matter that much. I remember the whale’s tail go up in the air and thinking how awesome that was. I remember smelling the difference between the fresh air and my stinky tent.

As the water rumbled and the ravenous winds attempted to make us cold, swept on by. I sat on the beach, nowhere comfortable to sit, but it was better than standing. Then as I sat there, I kept note in my head how many animals have passed on this day alone. I looked ahead of me to see the shore of a different cove, a cove we will never go to, but at this distance it looked like it was slightly underwater with that tint of blue. I listened, and I heard the water rush, and the birds sing and screech. I come back to my senses and remember that I am freezing cold, probably due to the frigid wind completing its mission, so I go to my tent and sleep.
