Hawk Highlights

Message from your Principal:

Dear Hanshew Families,

The first few weeks of the small group In-person learning has gone extremely well! School actually feels like school again with some of our students returning to the building. Please remind your students to follow the safety plan and wear masks properly. Here is the link to the safety plan, which can be found on the ASD website https://www.asdk12.org/domain/5379.

One of our parents, Dr. Melodie Isgro will be hosting a presentation for families on Substance Use in Adolescents on Thursday, February 4 from 6-7:30pm via zoom. Please check your emails for the link.

Feb. 1-5th is National School Counselor Week. Please encourage your students to show our counselors their appreciation!

As always, thank you for your support, patience, and understanding as we navigate the COVID-19 pandemic!

Sincerely,

Dr. Lakhita Hodge
Hanshew Middle School Principal

AP Updates

As we enter February, the Hanshew hallways have been a little bit louder and a whole lot happier! Although we are only able to offer in-person learning to a small group at this time, it has been good practice for when all students return, and a great opportunity to start reconnecting with our Hanshew Hawks. We cannot wait to have our whole Hawk family safely back in school.

PTA Membership

If you are looking for more ways to be involved at HMS, I encourage you to consider becoming a PTA member. In January, the PTA ran a membership drive, but any month is a good time to join. Help make your voice heard and lend a helping educational hand through our PTA. To join the Hanshew PTA, please see our website: https://www.asdk12.org/domain/4788

It's Almost Time for Sports!!!

Q4 Hanshew will be offering intramural sports. There will be two 4-week sessions beginning March 22nd. There will be no fees to participate this year, but students will need to provide the following:

  • A physical

  • Participation form

  • COVID Waiver

I recommend scheduling your physical now, if you've not yet done so, and look for more information and specific sports offerings in our March Newsletter!!

Sincerely,

Valerie Baalerud

Assistant Principal HMS

Spelling BEe Information

Dear Parents,

This year, the Scripps National Spelling Bee has developed an online testing platform that will allow Hanshew Middle School to host a school spelling bee program, whether your children are learning in classrooms or remotely from your homes.

In place of our traditional spelling bee program, we will hold competition through online spelling tests. The first step to spelling bee participation is for you to register for the Scripps National Spelling Bee's online testing platform by visiting https://online-test.spellingbee.com.

I encourage you to watch this video tutorial that will walk you through the registration process: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=htXzjpnMijc

Once you have registered, I will be able to assign the appropriate test to your child. Your child must complete the test before the given deadline, and these tests can be taken on any device with a web browser, including desktop computers, laptops, tablets and smart phones.

The students from each language arts classroom with the highest scores will move on to compete at the school level. This year, our school-level competition will be administered via online test.

Our school champion will then move on to represent Hanshew in the regional spelling bee program, which also may include online tests in lieu of in-person spelling bee events.

The first step to spelling bee participation is to register at online-test.spellingbee.com. Please register at your earliest convenience as I will begin assigning tests to students soon. If you have already registered in the online testing platform for another child, you can log in to your account and add an additional child to that same parent account. There is no need to register a different email address for each child in your household.

Please reach out to me if you have any questions about our school spelling bee program. I look forward to having your child compete to represent our school!
