REQUIREMENTS TO BE ON THE SWIM/DIVE TEAM
Complete sports registration through the East Activities office.
Show up to practice! Attendance and participation at practice, meets, team meetings, and other team functions are mandatory.
Additionally, all athletes must have ten (10) separate days of physical practice in the same sport activity prior to the first day of competition.
ATTENDANCE
Athletes are expected to be on time for practice and attend practice every day unless there is a legitimate reason (i.e. illness that kept you from attending school, academics, appointments, other extracurricular activities that coaches are made aware of). If an athlete cannot attend practice, they are expected to communicate with a coach. Attendance will be taken into account for PE waivers, participation awards, and varsity letters.
LETTERING REQUIREMENTS
East swimmers will earn a varsity letter if they complete the season and finish in the top 8 in an individual event at the Region meet or are named to one of the relays entered in the Region meet. Senior athletes with prior years of participation typically earn varsity letters. Varsity athletes must attend 80% of all scheduled practices.
Participation awards will be earned by any athlete who completes the season. Athletes must attend a majority (60%) of all scheduled practices.
PE WAIVER REQUIREMENTS
Athletes may receive a 0.25 waiver of PE credit through participation on the swim/dive team. To be eligible for a PE waiver, an athlete must be a member of the team for more than half the season with good attendance (>50% attendance of all scheduled practices).
MULTISPORT/MULTI-ACTIVITY ATHLETES
ASD policy dictates that a student may participate in two ASD sports in a single season as long as the coach of each sport is notified beforehand. Please discuss your commitment to the swim/dive team and a tentative practice/meet schedule that is compliant with the team guidelines of both sports prior to multisport participation.
The same policy applies to multi-activity athletes.
GEAR
A team suit is required to wear at normal season meets. We will place a team suit order during the first 2 weeks of the season. After that time, individual orders may be placed. Athletes are encouraged to have an additional suit to wear at practice. Because chlorine is harsh on suit material, we will wear our team suit at competitions and a different suit at practice every day. If an athlete does this, their team suit can last for many years.
Athletes are expected to provide their own goggles. Swimmers are often particular to a brand and style of goggle that works for them. Please provide your athlete with two pairs of goggles (at least) to use throughout the season. Goggles, as with any type of gear, can break, and will need replacing from time to time.
GRADES AND ACADEMIC EXPECTATIONS
ASD has set minimum guidelines on academic eligibility and these requirements will be enforced. Athletes should aim to exceed these guidelines by keeping up in their classes and advocating for time to work on academics as needed. The coaching staff will require periodic grade checks to ensure eligibility.
CONDUCT EXPECTATIONS
We expect our athletes to display a positive attitude, hard work, determination, respect for self, others, and coaches, and a commitment to academic excellence on a daily basis. Athletes who do not meet conduct or attendance expectations may be penalized by not competing in a meet or removal from the team, depending on the severity of the infraction(s).
BUSES
TOBACCO, DRUG, AND ALCOHOL POLICY
ASD policy will be followed, as set forth in the High School Activities Handbook.
TEAM CAPTAINS
Captains play a vital role in leadership and maintaining team culture. Team captains will be juniors or seniors nominated by the coaches. Key attributes include communication, dedication, effort, and sportsmanship.
