Greetings Dimond Football Families. I would like to introduce myself as the new Head Football Coach at Dimond High School. My name is Brian Yim and I am extremely grateful for this opportunity. I have been coaching football for over 10 years and have been involved with Alaskan High School Football for almost 20 years. I love the opportunities that coaching allows me to have in kids' lives.
I am a lifelong Alaskan and like most kids growing up here, my dream was to get out of here as soon as I could. I attended culinary school in Las Vegas after graduating from East and within 3 months I knew that Alaska was where I wanted to spend the rest of my life as this is where my family is. I consider myself lucky to be able to see so many members of my family on a daily basis, especially my parents and grandma, to whom I attribute my reverence towards hard work and caring for others.
I began coaching football immediately after graduating from high school. After returning from UNLV, I switched majors so that I could pursue a career in education as I knew working with kids is what I was meant to do. I continued to coach while working full time and completing my Bachelors of Science in Technology and Masters of Arts in Teaching. I am currently in my 8th year of teaching Culinary Arts, the last six of which have been at Dimond High School. The best part of my job is seeing non-traditional students achieve success and understanding that education, learning, and intelligence doesn’t have to be judged strictly on a letter grade, but on the lessons, skills, and knowledge attained.
I take this same outlook when viewing success on the football field. I will never say that wins and losses are not important but winning can be done in both victory and defeat. I want my players to have fun and win at everything they do. Every lift, every sprint, every play, and every game. I want them to win on the football field, in the weight room, in the classroom, and every other area of their life. And in those instances when they face adversity and are not on the winning side, I want them to learn, grow and come back with the determination to do better. And in that way, turn losses into wins.
I acknowledge the challenges we as a program have faced and look to make fundamental changes with the benefit of the players and the program in mind. For the first time in years, we will have a consistent offseason workout program, to include skills camps at the beginning of the new year. We will begin tracking players' grades and providing academic support year-round. We will hold team events and activities during the off-season to increase team camaraderie and school spirit. And I personally pledge to regularly check in with each player and provide support in whatever way I possibly can.
