Message from your Principal:
Dear Hanshew Families,
It is finally starting to look a little like Spring time (snow break up season) in Alaska! As a school, we have a lot to celebrate and be proud of for the first 3 quarters of the school year. We had over 43% of our students achieve the honor for the 3rd quarter. 86 of those students achieved an astonishing 4.0 GPA! Congratulations to all 337 students who were celebrated!
We are currently in testing mode with the AK Star Assessment. All students who were present, completed the ELA and Math portions of the test. 8th grade students will be taking the science test next week and make ups for ELA and Math will commence after that.
In concert with the school business partnership and Horace Mann organizations, our students will be entered into a drawing to win a bicycle at the end of May for attendance. Students who have 90% attendance or better each month or increase their attendance by 10% will be eligible to win, but there are only 2 bicycles that will be given away. We are so proud of our students showing up to school.
Please continue to check your student's academic progress in canvas and Q. Afterschool tutoring has started and is held on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the library from 4:15-5:15pm. The writing lab is open on Wednesdays and Fridays in the library from 4:15-5:15pm.
April is National Arab American Heritage Month, Scottish-American Heritage Month, and Autism Acceptance Month. We will be celebrating the many accomplishments of Arab Americans and Scottish Americans while also highliting the importance of valuing neurodiversity, supporting rights, and adapting communities to be more accessible for autism awareness month. Please feel free to contact me if you would like to be a guest speaker or have anything to contribute to this celebration.
School is in session on Friday, April 17th. Please send your student to school as this is a makeup day for one of the school closures. We will also have the Spring Fling Dance on that day from 4:15-5:45pm in the MPR. Parent volunteers are always welcome! Please check the Hanshew website and calendar for upcoming events and activities.
As always, thank you for your support, patience, and understanding this school year! Thank you for also entrusting us with the education and care of your students, we appreciate you!
Sincerely,
Dr. Lakhita Hodge
Hanshew Middle School Principal
