Hawk Highlights

Message from your Principal:

Dear Hanshew Families,

We are in the full swing of our last quarter at Hanshew and looking forward to finishing the school year strong. Please remind students to attend school every day on time! We have several students arriving late in the morning and missing critical instruction.

The AK Star Testing has started and is going well. The test will be on 3/28-4/8 and make ups will follow. Soon after, students will take the Spring MAP Growth benchmark between April 18-May 6th.

As we approach the end of the 4th quarter and school year at Hanshew, this is a reminder that students will clean our their lockers on May 12th and 13th. No bags will be allowed after those dates. Student government is planning an 8th grade celebration for all 8th graders on Monday, May 16th. More details will come out soon. 7th graders will celebrate the end of the year with their teams.

Afterschool tutoring is still happening in the library on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:45-4:00pm. Please contact counselor Deborah Badertscher will questions or concerns. Please check our website for all upcoming events and activities. if you have questions or concerns, please contact the front office at 742-9930.

As always, thank you for your support, patience, and understanding as we navigate the COVID-19 pandemic!

Sincerely,

Dr. Lakhita Hodge

Hanshew Middle School Principal

AP Updates -

Welcome to April

This is our final quarter of school. We have a lot going on assessments, projects, an assembly, and ending the month with a dance. We need to finish strong.

Discipline and Dance: Reminder to follow our Hallway Expectations by keeping hands and body to self, voice level 2 (conversation level), stay to the right, and no grouping. We will have our next assembly April 22nd and dance on April 29th. We want to ensure students are making good choices this last quarter, anyone who is suspended 4th quarter will NOT be allowed to go to the next dance.

Dress Code: I have included the dress code poster for again. Most students have been great at this, thank you. Reminder purses need to be left in your locker, if you need to get personal items you can go to your locker before you go to the restroom to retrieve it. If you have any questions please get in touch with me. If anyone has leggings or long shorts that are no longer being used, we will take them. Students put these under their ripped jeans and then they are good to go. The big dress code culprits have been cropped tops and ripped jeans on upper thigh area. Please remind students they are not allowed. Parents will be notified to bring clothes if student does not have appropriate clothing here at school.

Cell Phone / Electronic Devices : Students using their cell phone, ear buds, and/or electronic device during school hours 8am-2:45pm will have to turn their phone into the office and family will need to pick up the before 3:30pm the first time....If this happens again detention will be issued.

Parent Volunteers: If you would like to help during lunch time 10:30-12:30 or volunteer to help monitor the halls, please get in touch with me. We also have opportunity to help during sports (track and field help, dance chaperones, and more). Email me your availability and times and days you are available.

Covid Return to Play: Students not feeling well should stay home and parents will need to call and excuse their child. School work can be accessed online through canvas and should be turned in as soon as possible. If you have any questions, email or call.

Student Drop-off/Pick-up: Thank you to all the parents using the parent drop off South Entrance. Do not park or enter through the North entrance, as this is reserved for busses and staff. Please do not turn left at Lake Otis when leaving Hanshew from 7:45-8:15am and again 2:30-3:00pm as this clogs up the traffic and it is hard for busses to get in and out safely. Parents please only enter through the South entrance and exit through the North entrance. Please watch out for students entering and exiting vehicles.

Safety: Every month we will practice an evacuation drill, so in case we have an emergency we will know what to do. On top of that we practice other drills too. This past month we practiced an Alice Drill as if an intruder was entering the front doors. Overall, they did great. On April 28th during 6th period we will have another similar Alice DRILL with a scenario of an intruder entering from the side doors.

Sports: Native Youth Olympics just finished and students had a good time learning from Carol Wren....Thank you Coach Wren!! Track and Field and Softball have started practicing. Track and Field's 1st meet will be April 6th. Please check out the schedule for each sport. If you have any questions, please let me know. Sport Schedule .

Come watch Hawk sports but remember students must be accompanied by a parent/guardian who will supervise them Students cannot be dropped off. Show your school spirit and dress in Red and Black.

Sincerely,

Maria Humecky, AP

Library

Open check-out is all day, so stop in and check out some books and PLEASE RETURN ANY OVERDUE BOOKS!

Students need to bring Chromebooks every day to classes. I will no longer be loaning out computers or chargers to students if they forget those things. I recommend charging devices at home to avoid losing or mixing up chargers with other students.

The library is open most days at lunch. Students must have a library lunch pass to attend and need to eat lunch in the MPR first.

Migrant Education

If a physician is giving physicals at school, while Migrant supports the convenience, we cannot help with the (sliding scale) costs associated with extracurriculars.

Parent Migrant Surveys: I will be calling a family each day to check completion: Parent Migrant Surveys

MIGRANT STUDENT ONLY OPPORTUNITIES:

Congratulations to 3rd quarter honor roll!
