Can you escape in time?
Overview
For generations a massive generator has sustained the needs of the underground city of Ember. But the ancient generator is starting to fail, and as the city's lights start to flicker and fade, it is up to two youths, Lina Mayfleet and Doon Harrow, to follow a series of cryptic clues to help their fellow Emberites find a solution.
The Directions
It all starts when _______ looks down and finds her little sister ________ eating a piece of paper. This paper seems important because the print on it is from the old days. However, her little sister has eaten and torn bits and pieces of the paper, so it's missing some pretty important words. Without those words, it's impossible to make any sense of the intended message. She shares the information with _______, the greenhouse keeper, and she agrees that it is indeed important. She also points out a super-important phrase at the top - "Directions for _______." Together, she and Doon must find the rest of the missing words and phrases to find their way out of _________.
Doon is a very serious, intense young man. He and Lina used to be friends until her carefree, silly nature pushed him over the edge. Even at a young age, he can tell that the city of Ember is in grave danger, and it frustrates him greatly that no one will take him or the problem seriously. He wants to help, but often, his anger gets the best of him.
Hint: The first words are a quote that Doon's father says. The "final word" is a proper noun. It has to do with the book but not necessarily the story.

The Chase
On the day of the singing, Lina and Doon are wanted for "spreading vicious rumors." Lina and Doon are hiding at the school and decide they should leave a note for Clary explaining how to escape Ember. As Lina leaves, she is chased by guards! What path does Lina take?
Hint: You have to use the book for this one! During the singing, Lina and Doon find a safe hiding spot. Start there; from this location, Lina decides to deliver the note to Clary. She takes a certain path and it's all explained in the book. Find the map first (follow the link) and then write the directions she takes (N, S, E, W) . There are 6 total directions.
