What are the requirements of becoming a bus driver?

Applicants must have 5 years of (personal/regular) licensed driving experience and have a clean driving record.

What are the steps for becoming a bus driver?

  1. Complete the CDL Course (webinar/classroom), 4-6 hours/week over 8-10 weeks.

  2. Study for the CDL Knowledge Test

  3. Schedule the CDL Knowledge Test with the DOL

  4. Take the CDL Knowledge Test, Obtain Commercial License Permit

  5. Driving Practice (behind the wheel). Times vary, schedule with Sue Skorjanc.

  6. Skills Training (on the lot)

  7. Memorization of Pre-Trip

  8. Schedule the CDL Skills Test with the DOL

  9. Take the Final Exam, Obtain License

  10. Schedule CDL Physical

  11. Take the Physical, submit the Medical Certificates to DOL

  12. Schedule First Aid/CPR Training

  13. Complete the First Aid/CPR Training Course, Obtain Certification

  14. Request & Obtain Driving Record from DOL

  15. Submit documents to Transportation

  16. Schedule Fingerprinting and WSP background check with NWESD.

How much does a bus driver get paid?

During training, trainees are paid a two step compensation totaling $1000. Trainees receive $500 when they complete their 5th day behind the wheel and the second $500 when they receive their CDL and Bus Credential.

Bus drivers earn $24.49/hour to start. Bus drivers are paid on a 5 hour minimum, 180 days per year. We also provide medical, vision, and dental insurance through the Washington School Employees Benefit Board.
