Next week ASD will celebrate the incredible international, multicultural diversity of our school community. I am personally humbled to note that our students have roots and experiences – we ‘come from’ – over 90 countries of the world. Cultural dress, cultural booths and displays, classroom discussions and activities will all happen again throughout the week. Thank you, in advance, to the persistence and dedication of our planners, to the generosity of our PTA and AMA and all our parents groups, to our partners at Kempinski and St. Regis hotels, and of course to you in helping us help students to honor, respect, and celebrate the great number of threads connecting us to places, peoples, and each other.
While this short note is actually a repetition, it is important to state once more that the ASD Board has approved and sent a formal tuition increase (6%) request to the Ministry of Education under the guidelines MOE provides. It is our belief that all schools making similar requests will receive MOE response in February. We also remind our families that ASD has not increased tuition since the 2018-2019 school year.
The ASD Board Governance and Personnel Committee will review a draft of the 2024-2025 school calendars next week, and it is expected that an approved calendar will be released to parents shortly after the Winter Break.
Over the last month it has twice been ASD’s experience that parents have brought concerns or complaints to the Ministry of Education. After MOE received the ASP parental concern, the request from MOE (shared with the parents and with ASD) was that the concern/complaint was first discussed with school personnel. It is a hope and a reminder to parents that concerns get discussed as close as possible to the issue. Please see the link below to the Communications Guidelines we have previously shared with parents and community.
ASD’s parent community has responded generously to the Giving Tree program this year, and your gifts to our many campus workers are already being gathered in the Administrative Foyer. With only two more weeks left before our break, there may yet be opportunity to contribute to this gifting program. Thanks to all who have been out shopping to support our many contracted staff.

November 30, 2023
On Wednesday, November 22nd the Head of School, Mr. Steve Razidlo and Director of Teaching & Learning, Dr. Heather Vlach hosted a parent coffee morning to share the commitment and ongoing work related to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Social Justice (DEIJ).
The learning of this session had five primary goals:
To show and share how/where our ASD goals and initiatives have direct alignment with Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Social Justice (DEIJ).
Share the data that has been collected. ASD spent the 2022-23 school year determining what data to collect, how to collect it and when to collect it. We have since analyzed the data and determined the themes, categories, areas of celebration and areas for improvement. You can find this data HERE.
Remind our community what we mean when we say “DEIJ” (specifically how ASD defines each of these words and what they mean in our context)
Engage in DEIJ experiences. As part of the theme “accountability”, ASD provides three mandatory learning modules required of all incoming faculty and staff. Our parent community in attendance engaged in an immersive experience of what a small element of this learning looks and feels like.
Begin to consider our individual “why” for continuing to do this work and what we, as community members, might do to support this work within the areas of our control.
We invite you to view the slides from this November 22nd experience.
