Ms. Smith

About Me:

Greetings! My name is Taylor Smith. I am 29 years old. I have a pet frog named Merlin. Outside of school, I enjoy camping, hiking, cooking, live music, and spending time with friends and family. In terms of art: printmaking, drawing, painting, and ceramics are my favorite media.

This is my 4th year teaching. It is a great honor and privilege to serve students and families here at Ascent. My aim is for our students to not only learn to observe, discern, and love the beautiful, but also to create it and experience it for themselves.

EDUCATION HISTORY & PHILOSOPHY

Bachelor's of Fine Arts | 2016 | Colorado State University
As an art educator, I aim to show my students the boundless rewards of learning and creating. The ability to create something from scratch is truly a wondrous thing. The virtue of wonder talks to those who are willing to listen. I deeply believe that we as human beings are all naturally called to learn. It is my duty and pleasure to help students find and embrace this calling.

What do I want for my students?
I want my students to go out into the world and make deep connections to their art, their heritage, and their community. I want them to genuinely enjoy and engage with our world in a deep and meaningful way. Every day, our students pledge to love the beautiful and my class is centered around this philosophy. We ought to not only love, but also, create beautiful works of art. Through rich discussions and hands-on lessons, students develop the skills necessary to bring their own wonderous ideas, experiences, and emotions to life. I encourage all students to engage in naturalistic observation and draw as we see, not as we know. They participate in art exhibitions and critiques to build on their oratory skills and self-esteem.

What is my view on Classical education and art?
Classical works are important because they have stood the true test of time and are undoubtedly worthy of our admiration and safekeeping. Studying classical art and art history builds a window into the past for students to relate to and admire the great masters and truth seekers.

Developmental:
Our school has a vast library of books available to assist teachers in becoming the best we can be! This particular book touches on unique & specific methods for co-curriculars.

Leisurely:

With her colorful style, dramatic self-portraits, hardscrabble backstory, and verve for life, Frida Kahlo remains a modern icon, captivating and inspiring artists and art lovers more than sixty years after her death.
