Mrs. Mercier  |  Grammar School  |  Ascent Classical Academy Douglas County

About Me

I am thrilled and honored to have the privilege of having your child in my classroom this year! In case you don’t know me, my name is Kimberly Mercier and I am the lead sixth grade teacher for Ascent Classical Academies. I graduated in 2016 from Baylor University and am a Colorado certified teacher for early childhood through sixth grade. I teach sixth grade math, science and grammar here at the Douglas County campus. This is my sixth year of teaching and my fifth year here at Ascent. When I am not teaching, you can expect to find me on my snowboard, on a running trail, or at my crossfit gym!

Educational Philosophy

Although the role of education is multifaceted, I believe that education serves as the on-ramp for students to grow, thrive and flourish into the greatest versions of themselves.  Through guiding children in the exploration of critical thinking skills paralleled with their cognitive development, inspiring children that learning about the world is the most liberating part of life and bringing an invaluable team-work mentality to the classroom, I believe that children can and will thrive.

To begin with, I believe that when a teacher facilitates learning in such a way that children are challenged to explore options and the environment around them, they will gain greater understanding and comprehension in all content areas. As children develop, the way the teacher facilitates this exploration will develop along with them.

Furthermore, I believe that a teacher sets the tone of the classroom. When the teacher brings passion, energy and excitement about the content, children have a positive response and engage in the material. By brining the material to life in storytelling, relating the content to the students or hands-on projects, children gain greater understanding of what is being taught.

Finally, I believe that children can always better and grow each other by working together. One of the greatest lessons children can learn today to become valuable members of society is how to work alongside other people. By utilizing each other in teams or pairs, I believe children can help bring out the strengths of one another, learn from one another and challenge one another.

Though the education industry is always evolving, I am convinced that the core principles that drive the greatest education practices will always be constant. Through guiding children to explore the world in each phase of their cognitive development, inspiring children by bringing content to life and by facilitating learning in group settings, I believe children will flourish and grow to their greatest potential.

What to expect

As sixth grade is the final year of grammar school, we put a large emphasis on ensuring students develop the executive functioning skills they will need to thrive in upper school and beyond. This year, students will work to cultivate critical thinking skills, time management skills, and strong character to foster independence.
