Update from parents

It is with immense gratitude that we share our first update for the BCN Mask Fundraiser. In the last 12 days, we have accomplished the following:

  • Raised over 7,000 euros from 84 donors

  • Purchased 660 N95 masks

  • Received all 4 shipments from our first order

  • Donated 165 masks each to 4 Barcelona hospitals (Hospital Vall de Hebron, Hospital de Bellvitge, Hospital Clínic and CIMA)

We placed a second order for 1000 masks that will go to 6 additional hospitals (Hospital San Joan Despí, Sant Joan de Deu, Hospital Plato, Dexeus, Maternidad, and Hospital del Mar)... we hope to receive deliveries the week of April 12.

We could not have done any of this without your support. THANK YOU.

With all of our money now spent, we turn our efforts again to fundraising so that we can continue to meet the urgent needs of Barcelona’s medical community.

Please share this fundraiser within your trusted communities and networks.

Our intention is to keep a low profile - we do not want press attention because we know that supplies are being confiscated and centralized. Yet we also know, from direct contact with local medical professionals from our school community and personal networks, that supplies are desperately needed:

“Lack of protective equipment is a severe problem - we have 5 surgeons infected! It’s likely that masks will be needed in large amounts for some time so shortages will continue to happen… face shields and impermeable gowns are also a big problem. One N95 mask is given to each person and used for 3 weeks with surgical masks on top...” - Barcelona surgeon, Hospital San Joan Despí

“We had 700 patients admitted on March 30, with 147 in critical care. Normally the hospital has capacity for 40 critical beds, but different areas such as operating rooms and training rooms have been adapted to serve all patients. We are nearing the limit despite the reorganization. Due to the high number of patients, personal protection equipment is running out, so the number of infected personnel among us is increasing. This is why we need help to get the necessary material to work safely. We thank all the people who work on it, it means a lot to us.” -Erika Schmucker (ASB Parent, Anaesthesiologist, Hospital Vall de Hebron

“Masks would be very welcome, thanks a lot. We need all people to get involved in this fight.” - Barcelona surgeon, Bellvitge

We’ve raised our goal to 12,500 euros - and will continue our efforts as long as the need remains. If at some point the supply situation is resolved, remaining funds will be donated to a local charity.

THANK YOU!
