Hello everyone, and welcome to the 2024 blog for our Botswana Mission trip! This year we have 15 students in high school at ASB who will be going on the mission.
In order to prepare for our trip, we have had several meetings discussing our roles on the trip. There are a handful of different activities that we are organizing, and each student will be participating in/running them. Additionally, Ms. Marta and Mr. Javi, our teacher organizers, have been doing a lot of work behind the scenes to get the trip up-and-running! In early February, Ms. Marta held a meeting with the Botswana Department of Justice to discuss our upcoming trip.
In the days before our trip, we have all been carefully preparing for the activities we are running in the Dukwi Refugee Camp. Whether that's planning with teammates, coordinating with the school, or preparing via online course, each and every student has been working hard to make this trip a success! We have also been packing extra suitcases with all of the supplies that we are bringing to use/donate at the camp.
Here is this year's trip itinerary:
March 17-19: Gaborone
We begin in the capital city of Botswana: Gaborone. We will spend our time here presenting our project plans for the refugees in the Dukwi Refugee Camp to the Ministry of Justice, the European Union, and the Embassy of the United States.
March 20-23: Dukwi Refugee Camp
Established by the Lutheran World Foundation in 1978, the Dukwi Refugee Camp is about 500km outside of Gaborone. We will be implementing our new projects, as well as continuing with old ones. Thanks to RefugArt (a student run club at ASB) we have enough funds to provide the youth center at the camp with computers, printers, and internet connection for the next two years.
March 23-25: Kasane
The last portion of our trip will be in Kasane, a town near the borders of Namibia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. We will be learning about sustainable tourism via interviews with employees of Safari Chobe Safari Lodge–the lodge focuses on tourism and conservation. We will also be going on safari and visiting Victoria Falls!
March 26-27: Return to Barcelona
