EXCELLENCE IN APPLIED MATHEMATICS

PROJECT SUMMARY

With this project, I created an app that tracks calories/weight. I used Thunkable to make my design. It can track several things relating to health/weight.

WHY?

I have wanted to try out app design for a long time, but couldn't get into it, so I wanted to give it a spin with this project. I decided to make it a calorie tracker because that is something that I have been using this semester, and it also seemed like a good fit for my first serious app.

HOW?

I used Thunkable to design my app. It allows you to easily add inputs, buttons, etc. and run code in the background to make it all work.

WHAT?

I was able to get my app to do everything I wanted it to. You can set up goals, track your progress and get helpful statistics from the app. I also made the UI as easy to use as possible.

SO WHAT?

I learned a lot about app design with this project. I also found out that making an app is not nearly as hard as I thought it would be, which has given me more inspiration to try out other things.

WHAT'S NEXT?

While working on this project, I focused almost entirely on function and usability. If I had more time, I would probably try to make the app look better. I could add some pictures and change the background from flat white to something more interesting.

Thunkable's tutorials helped me a lot with dipping my toes into app design. My teacher, Mr. Shelden, also gave valuable feedback throughout the process.

JUDGES FEEDBACK

With plenty of commercials and marketing towards purchasing and consuming food, this app is very important to help people know what they are consuming and helps them to make educated healthy choices. I particularly admired the amount of weight gained with the calories, thus giving a concrete number that coorelates to the calories getting consumed. As a further exploration, I would add graphics and prehaps add different kinds of foods from a drop-down menu in order to help someone at a store or at a restaurant. By tabulating the calories consumed from a meal ordered at a restaurant, it would help someone make better choices when ordering. Congratulations on a very necessary app.
