How can we learn about geography in a fun way? The app I made has users guess the name of a South American country that appears highlighted in a map. If they answer correctly, a point is added to their running score and they move on to the next country. If they answer incorrectly, they can't move on until they answer correctly.
I did this project because I wanted to find a simple yet effective way to make geography and learning more fun. Many people often struggle to locate or identify countries in a map, so by playing this game they might learn a bit more by actively recalling a few countries' names when given their location in a map.
I created this project with Thunkable, a drag and drop app builder. To figure out the code I needed to materialize my ideas, I experimented with the different blocks and searched for solutions online when I was stuck.
I ended up creating a functioning app that worked with both mobiles and desktops. It has a home screen, game screen, and end screen with a congratulations message.
My results are important because they are proof that you can create almost anything you set your mind to creating. I learned that developing apps involve a lot of creative thinking and exploration.
I could've added a timer so that players could have an extra challenge. A good idea would also be to develop similar games but with different maps, and then transfer all of them to a platform that would contains many games focused on maps and geography. This platform could be a website or an app.
I got some of my ideas for the code from https://community.thunkable.com/. I also got my general idea for the game from the multiple map quiz games you can find online. The maps were all taken from Google. Special thanks to Mr. Shelden for introducing me and others students to Thunkable as well as giving me feedback throughout the process of making the app.
To start with, this app should be mandatory in many schools. Indeed, you were quite successful in your mission, which was to make learning geography fun. It is a straightforward idea that helps students. A neat exploration would be to add streaks like Duolingo or decrease the amount of time needed to answer a question. For students travelling on long trips, this would be an excellent educational supplement.
