Every year during the month of December the focus is on computer coding. ASA participates in the global Hour of Code where every student spends an hour learning the basics of coding through fun and engaging activities.
This is to demystify ‘code’ and show that anyone can learn the basics of computer science. It’s a necessary skill for the future, has great earning potential, and kids love it! ASA is onboard and opportunities are already scheduled for students from grades K-12. Computer science is a key piece to the STEAM program initiative and this year, more than ever, we were able offer more coding opportunities across the K-12 spectrum through programs such as VR Vex, Thunkable, P5 Processing, Scratch, Tynker, and more!
Elementary students have been exploring coding throughout the month of November in preparation for this month through programs such as Tynker, Scratch, Code.org, Codespark and Kodable.. These platforms offer students from K5 to 5th grade a variety of ways to learn coding through tutorials, activities, and independent challenges. Central to the idea of coding is giving instructions that any robot, person, or program could follow without confusion. ASA students not only learn a new language through coding, they learn organization, analysis, and logical thinking. The more they learn in elementary school, the more prepared they will be when they study Python and JavaScript in high school.
