This project is a video game. We took the game Mario 64 and made brand new levels to replace the old ones and to make a brand new experience. We ended up with a few fleshed out levels to play with. We did this by modeling an area in SketchUp and importing it into the game to replace the areas created by the original designers.
We decided to make this project because we wanted to have a friendly competition with another group with the intention of entertaining our classmates. We also wanted to push ourselves into making a long and time consuming but very rewarding project for the semester. We also wanted to create something fun to play.
We created our project by making 3D models in SketchUp to export as a .obj file. Then, we import them into the ROM of the game and add objects to them (enemies, warps, stars, etc.). Afterwards, when you play the game, the levels will be replaced with our designs.
Our final product had a few fleshed out and fun levels to play with. Along the way, we found out a lot about modeling and game design. The game we made is a lot of fun to play, which was our main goal with the project.
We believe that our result is important because it teaches us that our initial plan is possible. Something we learned from our results is that it's actually more complicated than what I thought to make a video game. We also learned a lot about game design as a result of this project.
While thinking about our project we had the idea of expanding it over the years so it can feel fresh. The way we could expand it would be to just add more levels. Our next steps would be to add a final boss and even an ending to our game.
We got a lot of information about how to use the ROM manager, which is a very important tool for ROM editing, from K.E.. 2 people worked on this project, L.A.P.M, and S.L.B.. We also got help from our teacher, Mr. Chin.
This project is a polished example of what STEAM Expos are all about! You have taken a beloved game and created something entirely new using a combined understanding of multiple technological platforms. This ROM hack is inspiring, looks extremely fun, and very well presented through both written explanations and accompanying multimedia supplements. I must say that I look forward to the boss fight if you every build it and encourage you to keep sharing your work with the community or even highlight this community sharing for the STEAM Expo next year. Very well done!
