The areas we have covered in this reporting window are:
Performing
· Jazz – Term One
Learners have had the opportunity to learn basic skills and techniques in a jazz style demonstrating correct posture and alignment, use of parallel and turn out, and isolations. They are also able to demonstrate basic jazz sequences. Applying these basic skills and techniques, they learn and perform a jazz dance demonstrating use of space, and performance qualities such as musicality.
Choreography
· Dance Actions and Choreographic Devices – Term Two
Learners have had the opportunity to learn basic skills and techniques in choreography demonstrating the six dance actions and choreographic devices. They are applying these skills and techniques to create their own short choreographic studies from visual stimuli. Learners must identify the actions and devices used, reflect on the effectiveness of their choices and those of others, and record suggestions for future development.
History and Context
· History and Development of Jazz Dance – Term Two
Learners have been looking at the development of jazz dance and the influence of various styles and cultures. They have had the opportunity in groups to carry out further research and to present their findings.
In S3 Dance learners work is mostly based on the CfE Level 4 experiences and outcomes and students will receive a working grade within that level. The majority of learners at this stage are working at Level C or above. Learners working below this level continue to be offered classroom support with CfE Level 4 content to ensure progression in learning.
Working Level and Working Grade descriptions for S3 Dance:
Fourth A: Making excellent progress at CfE Level 4 and performing well against all of the outcomes covered. Learners are consistently performing with confidence and flair demonstrating a high level of technique. Reflection on choreographic studies shows a firm grasp of the subject knowledge.
Fourth B: Making good progress at CfE Level 4 and performing well against most of the outcomes covered. Learners are performing with some confidence and flair demonstrating a fairly high level of technique. Reflection on choreographic studies shows a fairly firm grasp of the subject knowledge.
Fourth C: Making reasonable progress at CfE Level 4. Performing well against some of the outcomes covered whilst finding others more challenging. Learners are performing with some confidence demonstrating some level of technique but need to develop this. Reflection on choreographic studies shows some grasp of the subject knowledge. Occasionally work is incomplete.
Fourth D: Making some progress at CfE Level 4. Performing adequately at a few of the outcomes covered but do find a lot of the course challenging. Learners are performing with little confidence or performance and need to develop better technique and execute movements more accurately. Reflection on choreographic studies shows a limited grasp of the subject knowledge. Work can often be incomplete.
