Clifton Hunt first saw A Still Life on a Table by Willem Claesz. Heda in the collection of the Worcester Art Museum when he was six years old. He was captivated by the majesty, order, and peacefulness that permeated the painting and etched a lasting impression on his mind. Art was not part of his home life at this point, and Hunt remarks that he was stimulated by this profound experience without having the ability to understand it. Now, sixty years later, his most recent works explore those early stirrings.
Hunt’s intricate still lifes are influenced by Heda’s complex yet orderly paintings, as well Dutch painter Adriaen Coorte’s smaller compositions of fruits and insects. Though he finds inspiration in Heda’s larger and more atmospheric works, Hunt relates more closely to the simpler, organic imagery of Coorte, citing the likely reasoning that he’s lived on a farm for most of his life. The techniques employed in Hunt’s oil paintings are those he learned studying early traditional painting under Leon Hovespian at the School of the Worcester Art Museum in the 1970’s. While building on the principles taught in that classroom, Hunt transforms his new work using contemporary materials and mediums.
The props that Hunt chooses to use in his compositions are directly inspired by the items used by Dutch masters in the 1600s. Whenever possible, he tries to purchase the antiques he can identify in those paintings, noting that luckily, most fruits and vegetables are readily available. If he is unable to locate the props he spends time researching photos for reference. Within his original compositions, the combination of items are largely based on personal preference.
Something Hunt would like viewers to know about these complicated arrangements is that each piece hides a distinct story. One example: The Ming Dynasty porcelain, shown in his piece Chinese Kraak Porcelain with Blackberries, was briefly produced for foreign trade and called Kraak. The product was very fragile and great care was taken to transport it from its point of origin in inland China to Dutch trading ships on the coast. Wealthy Dutch buyers would purchase Kraak pieces and display them ostentatiously at home to impress their guests.
Like the items found in these works, each of Hunt’s paintings is full of history and hidden detail. Utilizing contemporary materials and time honored techniques, this latest body of work reveals a lifelong appreciation and mastery of the art.
